We have been writing about how much music has influenced our lives alot over the past months and Monday night was no different for me.
I was taking a much needed rest from doing some packing and I sat down to do something I am so darn good at in the summer months. Channel surfing.
I stumbled across some music, good music... oh wait a minute...what is that.. I remember these songs.
I had come across PBS doing a night of Doo Wop's best. They had brought back several of the old groups and gosh, they sounded great.
The first song I got to hear was the Tokens "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", followed by the Diamonds with "Little Darlin", and the Zodiacs, then Mel Carter doing "Hold Me".
By the time they brought out Little Anthony and the Imperials I was beside myself.
They did "I Thinking I am Going out of My Head," "Shimmy Shimmy Coco Pop", and a few others.
I was visualizing our CGHS gym filled to the rafters, as usual, for our after game sock hops swaying back and forth polishing those belt buckles. I saw everyone on the floor doing the Cha Cha and I was in heaven.
There were several other groups and if you get to catch the show, take the time to sit back and relax and let the memories flow.
And yes, hanging from the ceiling... was my so precious Sparkly Ball tossing off reflections of days gone by. FF and BomarGirl would have been so proud.

GH - I am so sorry I missed the PBS show; maybe they will have it on again. Those dances were so much fun. I just received the CG newsletter for fall yesterday; they are having a "Back to School Dance" shortly after school starts. I'd love to go! HA! Wouldn't you?? I bet they'll have "Cool Music and a Sparkly Ball"!
Hello Bomargirl,
I hope you do get to catch the program. With the music nowadays, it was beyond refreshing.
The very next night they had a special with Neil Sedaka and I taped it, can't wait to sit back and watch it.
You should go to the dance and see if it is anything like ours used to be, I bet not. You know they won't be cool enough to have a sparkly ball.
Did Liberace have sparkly balls?
It was wonderful when we all had them!
GB - You're way toooo funny!!!
Not only did Liberace have sparkly balls, remember that he also had candelabras and very flashy suits.
Talk about the Queen of Sparkle - There's a definite challenge to GH and her Sparkle Crown & Throne. However, she cannot be beat in White River Township as the Sparklly Ball Queen! Hands Down she's the Big Kahuna in my book!
Ha!
GB
Are you sure we are talking about the same thing. LOL
Yeah, that is my title, one of which I am very proud.
Anyway the memories were great and just wanted to share them with all of you.
I can see us now in Mrs. Morrison's class with the sparkles for our hair....do you remember that fad and how "cool" we were? Do you remember how she made us all get rid of the glitter? What a let down that was to our endeavor to be glamour girls.
ah yes, I remember the glitter well, trying to get it out was a booger.we were so cool back then. lol.
I also remembering sewing the waistband on my skirt to my dress about a zillions times until I almost had no material left.
Do any on you girls remember during part of home ec when we made something like a fluffy dish made with egg whites and poured over toast points or was I dreaming that day?? Sure thought it was good, but can't remember it for anything.
Sorry GH, I can't remember the fluffy egg white dish. That must have been for the advanced cooks! HA!
Your waistband was like my zipper; I had to take it out and sew it back so many times there was a hole in the fabric--I still get chills when I walk by the zipper section of a fabric store.

I can't begin to tell you about my zipper either. Like you, I get chicken skin thinking about it to this day. Maybe I should have been in shop class, it couldn't have been any worse.
That's okay about the recipe, one of these days I will found out just what the heck we made.
GH - Do you remember the skirt Fly made in 8th grade? I don't think it was for Home Ec; it was made from red corduroy. She didn't know it made a difference the way the fabric was cut. So the back cord was horizontal and the front cord was vertical...it was different shades of red front and back. I remember her commenting on the different shades her skirt was but she wore it anyway and had fun with it (typical Fly--that's why we love her!). She was always better at the sewing machine than me; at least she could put in a zipper!

That kind of rings a bell. At least she could sew, I was so bad at it. Too tom boysy, I guess for the girlie stuff. I was always bored to death in those classes. Now,I thank God,I had them, but back then, I had way too much to daydream about.
Do you remember when we had home ec.in the early mornings, and when it rained and we had those really dark, deary days? How spooky it was to look out all those windows.
I remember when the guys had shop class in the outside building and when the bell rang on rainy days they would run between the buildings and try to look so cool when they got to the door.
So many great memories.
GH - I must admit Home Ec was my nightmare class! No matter what I did it wasn't right...yea, those dark rainy mornings were more than dreary. No wonder we tried sparkles in our hair - HA!
I had forgotten about the guys running in from the shop class in the rain, lookin' cool. That makes me smile to think of it...thanks for the memories.
