A Party Line!
370J1...
Or was it 370W1? I can never remember.
One was my phone number, the other was Hawkeyes, and we were on a "party line".
Of course we needed to call one another often, 'cause there were three houses between us!
Did you listen in to your neighbors conversations?
Would you admit it if you did?
(I did... And because I did, I always assumed others were doin' the same.)
Anyway, this post is to open the VK party line.
I know you have something juicy you need to share with the rest of us! (Or maybe it's not juicy... just interesting?)
Let's hear it!

941J1 here
I still remember coming home from school and there she lay, that little amazing black boxy thing that opened the world. Or so we thought way back then.
I remember listening in, because some of the users would stay on for hours. I only stayed a few minutes though.
On another note here.
The UH college football team just completed a clean sweep tonight ending a season of 12 and 0 by beating Washington. We are the last standing football team undefeated.
We should hear tomorrow if we get invited to a bowl game and how our incredible quarterback fared.
What most people don't realize is, that by beating Washington, who had a tough schedule and by having a budget that rivals ours by almost 7 times, this was an incredible feat. We are just a small island supporting this team.
By getting invited to just one bowl game makes us more than twice the money we would have for a whole season.
It sort of felt like the old Milan win so many years ago.
This has been the best season on record ever for UH, so when and if we get invited to a bowl game, I hope you all can say a little prayer for us and root just a little. These kids deserve it.
This team always believed and never gave up and always speaks as We never I.
The members of the team from the mainland have spoken on TV how they felt they have learned so much about giving and patience and sharing from their Polynesians team members since coming here.
That my sharing for the day.
I can't remember our number but I sure remember having a party line.
There were 6 families on our line and each had a different ring -- two long rings, one long one short etc. You always knew who was getting a call.
The hardest time to get an open line was during the Tourney. Rosie and I would call a million times to find out the score. Of course all the other families were trying to do the same thing.
Rosie and I decided if we dialed all the numbers but the last one, counted to ten, then dialed the last number we would get through all the time. Patting our heads and hopping on one foot would probably have had the same effect.
I don't remember hearing any good gossip but I'm sure Jeanie B and I tested the other families past their endurance with our marathon chats. Not to mention the calls to Rosie,,, and she lived closer to me than Hawk lived to you, GB!!
But hey! Some news just can't be yelled over the fence, ya know? (I sure wish she understood that a computer and email is not evil incarnate.)
You guys had phones we just had tin cans and string. Not really I do remember having a party line also. Its amazing how far we've advanced in just 50 years. Can't imagine what the next 50 will be like. Beam me to Hawaii Scotty. May be that simple. GB and TD I'm getting tired this is three days in a row I've had to work. I'm ready for vacation!
TC - the changes really amaze me too. From one phone per household (maybe) to one phone per person. From one BW TV per house to one color (if not HDTV) per room/person
Plus the phones can take pictures, videos, send email and do a bunch of stuff I can’t even think about without getting dizzy.
MP3s are amazing too. Remember the big reel to reel tape recorders? And can you believe you can get a whole movie on a DVD disc? Put pictures on discs? No film or developing needed.
In my futuristic mode, I think people may have micro chips implanted. I don't know just how that would work but if phones keep getting smaller , they might as well make it like an earring,,, or a hearing aide implant.
I think it would be great if you could buy memory discs to compliment formal education. For instance, if you were a doctor, you could buy updated chips on, say, neurosurgery. It would cost a fortune but it is expensive to get the specialized education anyway. Plus it takes years. This would make it easy to update by just plugging in to your computer.
Perhaps we need to get a USB port implanted behind our ears (I have lots of empty space between my ears) and then we could just up-link to whatever.
Of course, viruses could be a problem.:))
Here's the first step on the journey you speak of, PT!
I have long wondered about all the numbers in our lives. How long before we assign Social Security numbers to our newborns, and simply make that their telephone number for life?
And the telephone itself? I have no interest in wearing an earring, so make the phone small enough to fit inside my ear canal, please!
370J1
How can I remember that number but can't remember what happen yesterday.
We had to have our dog of 14 years put to sleep the other day. He was just a little 4 lb pomeranian guy.
That was a rough day.

Hawkeye - So sorry to hear about your little dog. I know those are rough days. We have a 17 year-old Cairn Terrier and I don't know how much longer he has...
Thinking of you all.
Bo
Well said.
