Sidewalk Surfing

You know five or six of us went to the "Cruise Night" at the "Suds" after our Valley walk two weeks ago. If you have ANY interest in cars at all, it's something you should do. The Suds is open every Saturday night from late Spring through Fall, and you won't believe the crowd that gathers for the event.

I was on my motorcycle and left after most of the celebrants had already gone home. I drove up to the intersection that had the little Strip Mall that "Walker's Department Store" was once a part of. At the very end of that little mall, there's a road that goes downhill, back toward the Suds. When I say downhill, I mean DOWNHILL. It's a fairly precipitous dropoff in a short space, maybe a 30 foot fall over a 60 foot distance. We used to skateboard there.

Like so much else, it's interesting now to look at what has happened to some of the stuff we started. "Sidewalk Surfing" we called it, but it was the beginning of what is now skateboarding. We'd take a plank of wood, put steel roller-skating wheels on each end, and go have a ball.
Nowadays kids have huge boards with grippy (neoprene?) wheels, and where we did well to just steer and not "wipeout", these kids can do unbelievable things with their boards, as I'm sure you've seen.

They've put a concrete post in the middle of the road there by what used to be Walker's, but there's nothing there to keep "skaters" from flying down that hill.
I wonder if any ever do?

Friday.
Have a good one.
Tell us your news.

Spent the day in French Lick. Of course, I hit the casino. I also visited with my aunt and cousin. I'm now trying to clear a path into my sewing room. Sure would be easier with a little help, but I am the one that made the mess.

Getting ready for an open house in two weeks where I can hopefully sell some jewelry and rosaries.

Not had supper yet. I keep hoping Leroy will get something out of the freezer and start cooking. Doesn't look hopeful at this point.

The most exciting thing that happened to me today was when one of my dissolvable stitches finally came out of the hole where my molar used to be.

Hope everyone's day was more eventful than mine!

We love the Suds too. Nice quiet, no one in a hurry to leave....lots of very cool old cars........lots of cool paint jobs and big engines....you just don't see these things anymore.

I had a skateboard when I was about 11 years old. Again, like GB it was a board with wheels from a pair of metal skates. Had lots of fun with that skateboard. I did learn to turn it, but if I got into any gravel, all was lost.

Hawk and I went to our daughter's house a couple of days this week. I needed to help sew a "Vampire Dress" for my granddaughter. We visited our son's house also, had to see our fun 18 month old grandson. He is going to be a beach ball for Halloween.

Saturday night we went to symphony at the Hilbert (Circle) Theatre. I love the music in that wonderful venue. The night was complete with a glass of wine and later hot chocolate and a walk around the Circle. The monument, the water, the wholesome kids in their FFA jackets that were walking around (FFA Convention in Indy this week), why it was just a perfect evening.

Everyone have a great week!

GB,
I remember seeing the "brave skaters" by the Walkers' Building too. I haven't noticed any there recently but really haven't kept close track of that spot. I'll keep an eye on that and keep you posted. Those guys scared me and made my stomach flip just to look at them at the top of the blacktopped hill outside the drug store. Fly Girl and I once worked up enough courage to try the hill at Howard Rd. and Main St.....we survived only because we only tried one or two times! You could call us chicken!! We did give it a try though.

Mrs. Hawk, Sounds like you and Hawk had a great time in the big city! I love the symphony. It's good for the soul.

Love to all,
Bo
