LOL....When I first signed on, I had to look twice. At first glance I noticed that you spelled merrier wrong...and then I thought "what the ____?" That's too funny. I'm still laughing, and thank you for adding me to your blog.
I got a couple of emails from David Jester and he was commenting on my grandfather and stuff he remembers about him and I didn't!
My grandfather was the janitor at CG middle, elementary &(maybe even HS). His name was Alva Surface, everyone pronounced it Alvey.

I think I remember your Grandfather, Joker. My Grandmother worked in the cafeteria.

I was looking back through some ancient yearbooks and it seems that the people I asked to sign them included teachers, janitors, secretaries, and principals!! The Rock Stars of my little world, I guess.

Remember Mr. Shutt? Mr. Wilson?

Joker...I remember your Grandfather very well; he was such a nice, kind man. He had to have a load of patience too!

I found out the other day that Mrs. Lindley's granddaughter is my mothers physician...Brenda Lindley Russell, M.D. I told her that I got fat on her grandmother's yeast rolls!! HAH

I remember Mr Shutt, I think. Wasn't he an elementary principal?
I don't remember Mr Wilson.
My dad, Paul S., drove a school bus for years at CG, but I can't remember what areas.

Included in an email to me from Joker:
"I don't like to fish, but my daughter lives in the Ft Walton Beach/Destin area and I've been planning to go down there soon, maybe I'll be able to coordinate my vacation with yours and stop by to say 'hi'. "

So, whatd'ya think?
Do we want some "Joker" to show up at the DDFF?

I found my '65 yearbook and looked through it this afternoon, while my dog was in labor. I now have 5 new puppies. Anyhow, I haven't looked through that yearbook in years & years. Talk about a flood of memories. (Sorry guys...I have to get through all these forgotten memories before I can move on to the present.) Seeing Mr Huyser, the art teacher, made me think of the time John Kalscheuer smarted off to him and Mr Huyser made him go stand in the back of the room. Mr Huyser & John had more words and Mr Huyser grabbed John by the hair and knocked his head against the wall several times. Scared me! If that happened today, you better believe all the parents would be at that school ready to string that teacher up.
Purple Tabby - I saw Mr Shutt the superintendent, but I still don't remember Mr Wilson.

Glad that you have 'found' us. You said: "Talk about a flood of memories. (Sorry guys...I have to get through all these forgotten memories before I can move on to the present.) We have all been there and done that. It also seems like everytime we hear from a 'new' old classmate - it bring back more forgotten memories. Take your time remembering and enjoy the good ones. And don't be such a stranger from now on. 40 years is long enough....

GB and PT: Another re-connect.. Thanks for the memories!

OMG!!! JOKER!!! ALVEY!!! I just remembered him in my comment about Mrs. Hicks and the old brick building! I loved Alvey! I had forgotten that he was your grandfather! OMG!!! I'm so glad that you're bloggin' with us old Vandy Kids!

We have had so much fun this past year...and the mini reunions have been wonderful. I sure hope that you can make it to the DDFF to stroll down memory lane with us. There are always surprises when we get together and lots of laughs.

Oh, I do remember the John Kalscheuer - Mr. Huyser Incident! It was so scary. I was always afraid of Mr. Huyser...or at least afraid of his large, Mick Jager Like Lips....ooooh...scary guy in my book.

It's great to have you aboard the blog! Have fun catching up on all the memories we've been tossing around and add some...test our memories.

Welcome Welcome,
This is an incredible site full of memories with a bunch of old geezers, male and female, but we love it.
You spoke of John, he was a dear neighbor friend and we hung out alot. I was so sad of his passing.
I too, remember Mr. Shutt, I think he was the principal that passed away suddenly over one weekend and we all had to get polio shots that next week?????Help me here...
And Mr. Wilson was the principal when we were in Jr. High. He was a great figure and he had things under control. I remember him walking the halls, Bald with glasses and if he saw someone misbehaving, he would whistle between his teeth and yelled, "You there, here now". And they would present themselves to him at once. Always amazed me.
Okay here goes,
Greybeard said to leave you with some sage advice......
Today's Sage advice...Never Park Your Car Under a Coconut Tree..

Hi Joker. Great to have you with us again. I remember Alvie Surface but I didn't know he was your grandfather. He always had time to talk to all of us kids.
Sorry to hear about Mrs. Hicks. I had her in the 6th grade also. Nice lady.
I don't remember Mr. Huyser and John Kalscheuer getting into it. I remember Mr. Huyser leaving during class for a smoke and coming back with his hair messed up......
John was a great guy. We were in basic training together. He was eating candy bars before our last physical hoping to get his blood sugar up. Didn't work.
Again, a welcome to the Joker !

Hey ! Where is Ferdyflyer ??????????

Golden H,
thanks for the "sage" advice. LOL
and the email, too.

Hawkeye,
Mr Huyser came back with his hair mussed up? Was he in the cloak room with Mrs. Hicks?
Seriously though, John K. really was a pretty nice guy, he always seemed pretty easy going, but I didn't know him all that well. Probably hated art and Mr Huyser pushed his buttons so he smarted off to him, but John didn't deserve that.

Greybeard said...

Another Mr. Huyser moment, at another time he left the room:
John A. put his keys in the waste can.
Mr. H. came back, immediately realized his keys were missing, and quizzed the class about what had happened to them. Not a peep from the class, and I guess his keys got thrown out.
I actually felt a little sorry for Mr. H., but no one was gonna squeal on John.

Wonder if someone from the cloakroom took him home that night? ;>)

The Joker said...

ah ha! the plot thickens....so because of the lost keys thing (and who knows what else) there may have been some sort of long standing animosity between John K. and Mr. H. and finally Mr. H. cracked and went ballistic on John's head. I'm getting the full picture now.

Golden Horse,
I remember in elementary our principal died of polio and then they brought in nurses & Dr's and everyone in the school had to get polio shots. But I don't know if that was Mr Shutt or not.
