Dead Man's Curve

Surf music.
"The Beach Boys" and "Jan and Dean" hit the Top 40 about the same time...
I think both groups sang some of the same songs.

This tune was prophetic.
Jan Berry was nearly killed in his Corvette in an accident not far from the landmark that is the title to this song. Severely head injured, he survived but never fully recovered, dying in 2004 just short of his 63rd birthday.

The "shiny new Jag/XKE" challenges the driver of the Corvette "then and there to a drag", so we can pretty much assume the Jaguar is factory stock.
But what about the Corvette?
Has it been modified?
(Yes, if you know Corvettes you know the answer to the question.) Even if you don't know, take a guess!

Now, it's "Friday Open Forum" time.

Close Bo.
The '53 Corvette had a six cylinder engine and a "Powerglide" two-speed automatic transmission. Some sports car, huh!? Still, it looked like a space ship compared to everything else (except the Studebaker, which was always 'way ahead of its time).

That original '53 is now worth enough to pay off the national debt.

Well of course you are right, GB. I was too busy cleaning this dusty, mess of a house to think clearly! Sounds like a good excuse to me.

I didn't remember about the "Powerglide" two-speed automatic transmission. My 1969 VW had one of those; not sure about the "Powerglide" part in the Bug though! Can't say the VW had much power at all.

I don't think I knew anyone that bought a 1953 Corvette. We had a 1950 Plymouth....whooopeee!!

I received an email from Carol Crafton yesterday. She lives in Franklin, and is doing good. Her email address is:

It was great hearing from her and all about her life. Hoping to get together with her soon.

I sometimes thought "Deadman's Curve" was on Fry Rd. when car lights were turned off at 11:00 p.m. and we "just kept it between the telephone poles" at who knows how fast Mr. S or Mr. T were driving. YIKES!! No doubt someone above was looking out for us.
