Rewind to the 60's

After having a pretty bad week, I sat down to open some emails and there it was, an ad from one of my favorite places, The Vermont Country Store. After a 21 year absence, Bonomo's Turkish Taffy is back. I don't know about you, but a trip to Walden's Drug Store was a frequent stop for me.
Bill, Jo and Kirk were such nice owners and I always stopped by the counter so Harry or Gary could fix me a cherry root beer in a nice frosted mug. Cost 10 cents. The cherry was a nickle.
I must have ate my weight in Bonomo's over the years and now they are offering it 8 bars for $14.95. WHAT?? What happened to the nickel candy bar? But, heck, if you are looking for something weird from your past, chances are this store has it. They have all four flavors, but vanilla was my first choice.
Now if they would just bring back the pink candy lipstick, a sweet confection in a gold wrapper.

GH, The reason those mugs were frosted was I had to dip them in hot water after I washed them. I liked the ice cream sundays and sodas both east and west. Do you remember cherry milks? I tried lemon milk NOT GOOD. Had to learn how to sweep without making dust. Right a 16 year old that sweeps and without a dust Ha Ha. One scoop of ice cream for 5cents and I should say 5cents a scoop as many as you wanted. H of C&H

H,

I had forgotten the Cherry Milks. But I sure enjoyed those frosted mugs. Many nice memories from there. I sure loved their candy selections and this Bonomos ad, just brought them all back. Thanks for sharing.
As for the dust, heck, I can't get better half to sweep without dust to this day. lol.

Good Morning to all. The sun is shining and we get up to the mid 30's today. Still remember a nickel bottle coke and one penny peanuts (machine) to go in the bottle . . . or if it was your lucky day, a lemon fountain coke with a bag of cashews to go with it . . . Christy's Drugstore before we moved to the Valley. Was at the point of Bluff and Meridian and then moved over to S. East Street north of old Hermanns location. Playing "ball" in the cinder covered alley, what is this . . . a real ball field in the Valley and close enough to walk to it!
Doesn't get much better than that.

You may not like me afterward, knowing I haven't really changed much in all these years...
But I'm gonna admit what a nasty person I was (and can be).
My neighbor Bill S. worked behind the counter at the fountain @ Walden's for a while. I'd buy a milkshake and Bill would wait until I had consumed enough of it from my glass to pour the excess he had made into it. The excess was not insignificant, maybe amounting to 1/4 of a glass.

Bill moved on and another upperclassman took his place. I ordered my normal milk shake and when he started to pour the excess down the drain I asked if he could pour it into my glass. He turned to me, smirked, and with a flourish, wasted it.

I went home, pounded a three-penny nail into a 1X4X4 square board, nail upturned, and placed it strategically behind the right rear tire of his (parked facing the curb) 1956 Ford.

Jerk.
I never went back, so I didn't even know H. worked there.
Too bad.
H. would have given me the rest of my milkshake I bet.

I still remember the jingle, "Oh Oh Oh, it's Bonomo's...candy". Banana was my fav, and we liked to eat it as a snack while swimming at the Loogootee pool.

GB I would have given you the extra. I liked to see if I could make one that you could turn upside down and not lose a drop. I think Steak and Shake use to do that. To this day I want mine thick thick thick. H of C&H
