Florida Keys Fishing Report

Thanks to PT & GB I'm an Official Contributor to the VK Blog.

TD certainly was a welcome passenger, and proved to be one fine fisherman. As the story goes: It was a dark and stormy night....

Well, not exactly a dark and stormy or night, more like a slightly cloudy, slightly windy and slightly bumpy day on the water. After several hook ups and some "Rockin' & Reelin' " by the three of us, we headed back to shore with plenty of nice-size dolphin and a respectable-size black fin tuna.

TD reeled in many of the dolphin, the tuna and another "something or other" fish that was tossed back in to live on in the Atlantic. We all had our jobs to perform: Obviously, TD's main duty was to reel in as many fish as possible while keeping an eye out for birds, boards and other floating objects. I was at the helm trying to keep us close enough to the weed lines to lure the fish up without getting into them, while HB spent time reeling in our lines and removing all the weeds that I was unable to avoid...ha! Needless to say, HB was an excellent mate for the day, and TD and I kept him busy with baiting and re-baiting the lines and performing his de-weeding duties. HB did find time to reel in a few dolphin and managed to lose one or was it two, TD? All in all, it was a fine and fun day on the water. We caught enough fish (12 or so??) to make us happy, tire us out, and provide a wonderful dolphin-dinner for us that night. HB had hoped that TD would fish the next day, but TD opted (like the wonderful husband he is) to spend time with Mrs. TD back in Key Largo. TD made the correct decision because the weather was deteriorating and a tropical depression was headed our way. HB and Capt. Pete did go out the next day and caught more dolphin, but their day was cut short because of storms. They made it back to shore just before the weather got really nasty, and we spent the next couple of days on shore waiting for better weather. Eventually the storm passed, but the fishing was not the best. HB did catch a beautiful sail fish one day! Needless to say, HB was a very Happy Cappy! Unfortunately, I was not on board to take a photo of this exciting event... But I did manage to get TD to pose for a photo with a couple of his dolphin. So hats off to TD for joining us off shore and making our day a very special day. We hope to do it again!

Great report of you'als fishing fun in the sun. Those fish are HUGE! Sounds like you were very busy Fly with all the weed duty, etc.! Good to see TD's still strong enought to hold those big fish too! HA!

I can see that the wind was blowing the palm trees quite a bit.
It's great you all had such a good day.

BO - Thanks for recognizing my admiral "Weed Duty"..ha! TD's dolphin were "respectable" in size and monumental in flavor! We'd hoped to reel in some larger ones, but you gotta take what you can get and be thankful for that!

Hope you and I can make the Galveston Expedition or the Keys in May '07! It would be a lot of fun to "hook up" with you again after all these years! So let's try to make it in May. I'll do my best to make the October Fest too. Hope to see then!

Fly - That fishing looks like so much fun. I hope Tools can have us down for the GGFF in May. I guess you know I have NO, NADA experience with this. Hope we have a captain who will help. I may get dismissed to "Head Duty"! HA!

As far as I know I'll be at the Oct. "mini" unless something unexpected happens.

Fly - How many miles out did you go on the fishing trip with TD? Did he get seasick? I've been talking with my cousin Scott. He wants me to go but take Dramamine and good sunscreen. Do you remember David Walters from Whiteland? He was with Scott when they went out and got terribly sea sick....they were out about 26 miles and had to turn back.

MY oh MY! What big fish you have Two Dogs!

Too bad they will look like guppies after next spring!

Been in Resort Prision lately and out of touch with VK! Glad to be out of Prison for 1 day!!!

BO - We went out about 18 or 20 miles, and it was a bit bumpy. TD did not get sea sick; I usually don't have a problem as long as we're trolling and moving at about 1500 RPM (don't now mph). I get sick, if we're anchored fishing for grouper or yellow tale. Then I'm good for about 3 hours...then it hits me, and I give the order to head for shore

I've never taken dramamine, but am told by expert "pukers" that the stuff over the counter these days doesn't make you fall asleep. So I recommend taking dramamine and using at least a "baby 50 spf" sunscreen. However the May sun in FLA is not as intense as the June Sun... Also the Texas sun might not be as intense either, but the GGFF alumni will have the skinny on that.

Of course, I remember Scott. I hope he & Glenda (right?) are doing well. He's given you some good advise. But don't you worry about going off shore. The Captain & Mate on a Charter Boat are responsible for ensuring that their clients for the day enjoy themselves. They do all the ucky bait rigging, etc. You just have fun! Okay?

TD - Okay, let's get the restaurant name corrected: it's Lazy Days... wasn't Happy Days a 1970's sitcom? Ha..Ha!! Regardlass, Happy or Lazy, the sure have yummy food.

But the "OV" is not to be missed! They do have probably the best fried hook & cook on the key and the best "local color" at the bar. One night, one of the female locals fell off her bar stool and hit her head and was out cold. The bar tender did call 911, but until the paramedics arrived, all the other partons just stepped over her to get to the bathrooms. I guess she was luck that no one stepped on her... those "locals" are polite, even when under the influence...ha! Remember Wednesday night is "Flip Night"...Be There!

Cappy (HB) was not specifically trolling for a sail fish. He usually rigs one of the lines deep inorder to get a sail up, if there's one out there. That's one of the fun things about trolling, you just never know what you might hook up. Wahoo is also fun to catch; thy're usuall pretty good size and great eating...yummy!

Cappy & a pal went to the Islamorada Friday morning for a couple of days off shore and visiting the "OV". He decided to put his digital camera on board this trip - just in case they hook another sail fish...Ha!!! He'll be back home on Monday with some fresh dolphin again - too bad that I have to cook them - no hook & cook is snooty Sorry-Sota!

Remember our tall-tale about "Bubba" the 5'4" dolplhin? Well, I'm going to try to scan a photo that I have of him and his captors an email it to you. The photo is in a frame and under glass, so I'm not sure if the scan will work. If I can get a scan of it, you'll get to meet "Bubba". Ha!

There's always another "Bubba" out there with your name on it. So whenever you get the itch for fishing and Mrs. TD wnats to visit her family...HB will try to make it to Islamorada. You are always welcome.

Galveston or the Keys...I'm up for it in May. I'll check with the Drop Anchor Paradise in November '07! I'm lovin' it!

PT - I love your wicked laughter!

This is the corrected version!

FlyGirl,

Thank you for the pictures of the 2 TDs (Two Dolphins and TwoDogs). I am sorry that we didn't get you or Capt.HB in the pics! By the way, the Two Dolphins (TD) take a much better picture than than that old man - TwoDogs

What a great description of the trip. Next time, I'll plan to fish with HB at least a couple of days. How many did we loose? 1 or 2 at the most. And those - only because of my inexperience.

Lazy Days is a great place for dinner. The different ways that they prepared our fish was excellent. And I would go there anytime... But, After reading your report on the OV - that sounds like my kind of place, also... And I missed it! Next time - OK?

And I'll bet catching that Sail made Capt. HBs day. Was he fishing for Sails? He sure seems to know what he is doing on the water. As do you! Thank You Capt. HB and FG for that day in Islamorada. Loved the Keys!

To ALL,

Islamorada or Galveston?? Let’s start working toward one or the other by this fall. FlyGirl, would that be soon enough to start planning for something like this?? If we can get some numbers together and hear something from Tools, we should be able to decide on a location. I'm up for either and I will work toward whichever location is chosen or determined to be the best fit.

Right now, You can count on 2 from TwoDog's camp. – Anytime May or ????
Makes no difference to me....

Then a trip to Paradise in early November!

Guppies, You say????

TD - Regarding the Guppies comment from PT...

I think you should post a pic of Bubba! Now we're talking some Giant Guppies, right?

Bo will probably faint at the sight of Bubba, and PT Gasp at the Giant Guppy...ha!

You gotta love Bubba!

BoMarGirl said...

OH, let's see Bubba! I'll have Max Eugene standing by to catch me if I should faint. I could play my Scarlet act, "Oh, where will I go?, what will I do?" On second thought maybe not, Max Eugene would say, "Frankly Bo, ..............".

I must have fainted already and landed on the "Publish" key....it printed 3 TIMES! Sorry VK's

Flygirl said...

Hey Bo! I just read your comments... I just read your comments... I just read your comments.......ha!
I thought I was in the Twilight Zone! You're too funny!

I also just read my comment before TD's...sorry for all the typos! Where was my head that day? Probably in Resort Prison and in a hurry!

We'll see if TD posts Big Bubba's Photo...ha! He might have deleted Big Bubba By Now! But you make sure that Max Eugene is close by when you come to VK next time.

HB's middle name is Eugene also! Oh my, Miss Scarlet...what do we seen in those Eugene Hoosier Boys? Ha! I watched GWTW a few weeks ago. I'll never tire of it! Scarlet's beauty absolutley captivates me every time I watch the movie. WOW! Plus she was a little wacky too...I like that! More Later and keep watching for Big Bubba...

BoMarGirl said...

I admire Scarlett, but she is rather strange at times; like when she made the dress out of the green velvet curtain and the hat to match with gold fringe; she thought she looked so beautiful with a curtain on!! HA!! Max Eugene HATES GWTW, he sprints out of the house when it comes on TV. Speaking of Eugene's; our friend "Tools" is another Hoosier "Eugene". Why doesn't he talk with us?? Where is the dear sweet boy?

Flygirl said...

BO - Don't have a clue to Tools'-Eugene whereabouts? He must be way off shore lately. It seems that everybody is busy doing Summer Schtick...except me. It's always Summer down here; just less touristas to battle this time of year.

There must be a "Eugene-Aversion to GWTW". HB also rapidly flees the immediate area of Atlanta and Tara.

Let's hope that we hear from Tools soon re: GGFF in May! Go Pinks!
