Quimby Shirrell

Last week I emailed everyone about a Benefit for Quimby Shirrell. She is at the IU Hospital in the transplant center. You can go onto my Blog and see all the details on her & her sister's surgery Oct. 16th.

This is the flyer we are hoping to put out. We have talked with the American Legion and the VFW. Both said they thought there would be no problem in being the sponsor, but they have to present it at their meeting on Tuesday. If we have anyone here that is in the American Legion and could put in a good word for us, that would help alot. You can call Scott @ the American Legion - 317-881-1752.

Carol - I am so sorry to learn that Quimby is having a hard time right now. She is a wonderful girl and deserves to be well and enjoy life. I will keep her and your family in my prayers.

Carol: Very sad to read about "Q-Girl"! I'd like to buy a ticket to the dinner/fundraiser, even though I probably can't be there.

Can I send you a check? Let me know where/how to get a ticket...

What an ordeal to be going through! "Q" and your entire family are fighting a battle together and need all the support you can muster. What brave children and grandchildren you have...my prayers to your family!

UPDATE:

The operations are over, everyone doing good and TJ is on his way home from Iraq (he was shot last week in the leg). For Lori & Tony yesterday was all good news.

Leslie went into surgery around 10 AM. They took a liter of bone marrow, at 1:45 Quimby was getting her sisters marrow. This was a bright red, more so then what she normally gets. This took 2 hours for it to drip into her body.

They decided to keep Leslie overnight. She didn't get out of recovery until around 3 PM. She did fine during all the procedures but in recovery, after they took the breathing machine off, she kept stop breathing. They had to constantly keep waking her up and reminding her to breathe. When she did get into her room, the first thing she wanted to do was go and see Quimby. They both are on the 5th floor, so wheel chair bound she was on her way down the hall to her sisters room. As she entered the room her comments were "so there's my bone marrow". She did get a little sick (4 times) on her way there and back, but to her it was worth it just to see Quimby being given a chance at life. She was very sore and they were giving her meds to ease the pain.

TJ will be going through Germany and then back to the Oklahoma base by Friday.

Leslie's plan is to fly home (Kansas) on Thursday and then try and meet TJ's plane when he lands.

Tony will be taking Chrissy and the girls to Oklahoma to meet up with TJ when he comes in.

Quimby was given injections for the last few days so she would not reject the bone marrow. If there was going to be any side effects that would have happened within the first hour. NO SIDE EFFECTS.
They said in about 2 weeks they should start to find out if this is going to work. If her blood counts start to go up, that will be a good sign. The first 100 days will be the most critical to make sure she doesn't reject and that this procedure works. This is only the second procedure of its kind in the United States. They will most likely give her some platelets today because her count was very low yesterday. She was having some problems yesterday morning because her heart was having to work harder because of the low count.
