GBFR, Week Seven

Well, I hafta provide a couple excuses!
I'm still lookin' at 199 this morning.
My excuse, and I'm stickin' with it, is Valentine's day...
Sara Jean and I went out to dinner, and we all know, dieting is tough when you are eating out.
So no loss this week. I think I'm gonna have to add a little exercise to my program in order to stay on my "pound-a-week" schedule. It's been tough to exercise the last couple weeks, what with the trip to Arizona, and the weather has just been horrible here lately.

Anyway, my goal next week just got kicked up a notch... I'm shooting for 197.

On other topics... I've made the initial inquiries about chartering a boat for the DDFF.
TwoDogs will be posting about lodging for the VIP.
We both are hoping more of you will decide you want to attend, and will declare your hopes to do just that.

Got something to share with the rest of us? Push the "comment" button!

Good on ya, GB. You are my hero.

I lost 2 pounds this week (after how many weeks of trying???) But I have 3 midterms this week so the stress alone may bring them back.

Why couldn't I be one of those people who lose weight when stressed?? Baghdad damn near made me too big to get back on the plane!! (Trust me, I was gonna make that flight if I had to saw off a limb or two )

Still, if losing weight gets harder with age, this fat-suit MUST go ASAP.

Facing 70 looking more like Aretha Franklin - the Later Years - would be good only if I learned to sing, won some Grammies, and wanted to wear a bolt of blue taffeta in front of thousands of people. It ain’t happenin’ folks.

On another subject:

Some of you already know I'm in a 6-month program to become a certified paralegal. I absolutely love this class even though I'm lost most of the time.

Commercial Law, Business Law and Real Property are the current classes and man oh man does that cover a LOT of information

If I've learned one thing for sure it's that everyone MUST have a Will. Lots of things happen after we die and if we don't have a Will, they are ALL bad.

You might think that your life is tidy, surrounded by loving people, clear inheritance laws and papers that will make things smooth for your survivors. Don't bet the farm on it.

Get a will. Pony up the money and just do it

You don't have to have an attorney to do it but I would just because there are lots of little teeny tiny things that ordinary people never think about that need to be addressed.

And thus endth the sermon.

On yet another subject:

Ya know, one of these days we’re going to lose Vandy. I hate to say it but we all know it’s coming sooner or later.

Instead of waiting for that awful news to decide on sending flowers or not, what if we donated money from Vandy’s Kids to a scholarship fund ahead of time,,, make the donation in his name?

I have NO idea how to do this. Maybe there is something already in the works that we could add to. Does anyone know?

PT - YOU CAN DO ANYTHING including losing weight and becomming a paralegal...maybe not at the same time !! HAH!! YES YOU CAN GIRL.

Great idea for something to acknowledge Mr. V. Of course, the new gym is named "Vandermeer Gymnasium" after him. The majority of the scholarships are grouped in the "Center Grove Scholarship Fund". I know any $$ given in Steve Lammert's,Mark Bunton's name and Alex Girdley's goes into that fund; also Jay Harden and others.

Mr. V loved being with the student body so much, I wish we could recognize how he cared for all of us and attempted to instill the qualities that would help us be good citizens, parents and have happy, successful lives.

Even after he retired he would sit out in his yard, with kids from the neighborhood surrounding him,
talking, teasing and loving every minute of it! He also always had several people to talk with at Marsh. I don't know how Margaret ever got him out of the grocery!

If I could afford it I would love to see a bronze replica of him in the school somewhere with students surrounding him and smiling. But that I suppose is a dream.

Bo and PT, With all of us working together - that is a dream that could come true. I like the bronze replica or large plaque idea alot. Maybe of him and his beloved Margaret - Surrounded by students. Along with donating to a scholarship fund in his name.

Donated by VandysKids or the CG Class of 65 - I think we can, I think we can, I think we can!

Great Idea.....

Knew you were in school, PT, but for some reason I thought it was totally nursing-related. Paralegal work, as it applies to medicine, is a great field.
As an expert in the medical field, you'll be in great demand. I'm impressed with your efforts, and I commend you!

Your comments on needing a will are topical, aren't they? This fiasco over the "silicon implants with a woman attached to them"...
Anna Nicole Smith's situation, is worth our attention only because it will reveal what heartache is left for surviving loved ones if you don't have your legal affairs in order.
Sara Jean and I have wills, but they are 20+ years without being updated. A codicil, or maybe a totally new instrument may be needed. My opinion- the few $$$ your lawyer will get for making sure your will meets Local and State regs is worth every penny. Thanks for the prod... we'll get on that right away.

The idea of establishing a scholarship is a good one.
It doesn't have to be a big deal...
a properly managed fund that started out providing a small scholarship could grow to provide a much larger sholarship, or many small scholarships.
I'll do some studying on the matter, and will post some findings on it in the future.

I also like the idea of a Vandy memorial. Bronzework would be expensive, but would have a great impact. We could also commission a painting at lower cost. Anyone know of an artist among VK's?

Weather related topic-
At risk of sounding like "I walked to school in four feet of snow with a headwind in both directions"...
they cancelled school here this week because of 4 inches of snow and temps in single digits. I can remember wondering if our school bus would be able to make it up the hill to school when the roads were snow/ice covered.
Things sure have changed.

I had no idea you were going to paralegal school. Gosh, girl, I can barely remember my name let alone write it down. My hats off to you.
BMG
Since you are so familiar with the school, I know CGHS has changed income brackets, but do they have any children that might miss out joining in an activity or field trip and could use a fund set up just for that?
I think you guys are on to something wonderful.
The idea of a beautiful oil painting of him sounds like a great idea.
I am with you on whatever you decide.

GH-
C.G. gives the impression of money but there are a lot of kids who do not have even money for books or lunch. Your idea is a good one because I'm sure there are students that would be able to be in Marching Band, Choir and other activities if they could afford the cost.

Great ideas for honoring Vandy & Margaret! Please slap me, if the following is really stupid! I tend to live in the past these days and am way out of touch at times.

But, here goes: whether, painting, statue, or placque, the need for continuing funding to support this effort is critical (I get this insight from all my years in the wonderful world of not-for-profit museums & theaters).

Anyway, do the schools still have fund-raisers? Is there a slight possibility that students and/or the school would sell "Vandy Candy" (hopefully by the case..ha!)to help fund a "Vandy Kids" memorial to be used for... whatever???

I know the Girls Scout do it...and we did it in school, etc. If Vandy Candy were sold at school events (do they even have the old concessions stands?)and seasonal candy drives by students were done, could this generate enough revenue to make a difference? Would the students even do this? I DON'T KNOW, I'M PROBABLY CRAZY...

But, I've seen the memory of people/donors slowly disappear without the revenue to perpetuate continuing projects. I have no doubt that many of CG's graduates would get on board for this project. My concern is with the future CG students & grads?? I guess I just don't have a lot of faith in them...sorry! But, unless they get something from a VK fund, they won't give a hoot about it. Now, I'm probably just acting like an old person...negative about today's youth...so let me know, if I am just an old fool about this.

Painting, Placque or Statue???
This could be tricky. Remember the saying: "I don't know anything about art..but I know what I like"! Ooooh, how true!!! The most difficult medium for more than 2 people to agree upon is a painting. Bronze statue: very expensive, multi-step process, but easily maintained. The placque is probably the most affordable, but would have the least impact because of it's size and placement...placement is a whole other baliwick!

Anyway, I've taken up too much space with my ramblings. It's just a little bit of insight into my world of not-for-profit organizations like schools, etc.

There are always plenty of needs to meet and places to put funding; it's deciding on where to use the funds that can be a tough task. Vandy loved sports and Margaret! I recall his theory of rewards for good behavior & grades. Oh, I'm done rambling and embarassing myself! I say fund a hugh paddle for whacking and a three-day expulsion camp where kids have to work hard!

PT the Paralegal Tabby!!!! I love it!

You just keep amazing me! I'm with GH...what's my name? Duh?

You've really taken on a challenge, but you're smart and you'll make it just fine. If you're in a six-month program...let's see this is midterm time...you'll finish in May?
I hope you can tolerate working with/for attorneys, or do you plan on going out on your own?

Whatever you do, you'll be smashing in "blue taffeta" and I'll be right behind you in "red taffeta"...I've always loved 'Retha! R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Good advice on getting a will! Oh, yeah...do it now! I had to practically drug and hog tie my father to do this. Then, when he passed away, I discovered that he had NEVER SIGNED the trust papers! I hit the roof and was ready to check out and find him until our attorney calmed me down. It was all okay, because Mom was still alive! Whew! Needless to say, that situation was taken care of immediately.

We sure need to heed PT's advice. It can get real ugly, real fast...so put your wishes on paper and go to an attorney. It's money well spent.

Also, living wills should be in the hands of children as well as family doctors, etc. When traveling, carry one too. If you want to control your health care,no matter where you are, you better keep one with you.

All of this is less painful and much less inconvenient than preparing for a colonoscopy! Don't forget to schedule yours...ha!

Fly is right on when she talks about Funds to maintain whatever we do for our Vandy and Margaret project.

Could a paralegal help us out with ideas to make this memorial last and not be destroyed? PT, how about getting that degree a little faster??? HAH

As time goes on and students and the community have no recall of Vandy, they will not value our memorial. We do need to somehow establish a maintenance fund.

BoMarGirl said...

Fly - Yep, the old concession stands are still there as far as I know.

Speaking of living in the past, do you remember a couple of girls who climbed over the top of the concession stands to get candy after school? I've heard about them but can't remember their names.

Flygirl said...

Bo-Please tell me that I am not guilty of climbing over and into the concession stand after school to get a candy bar! OMG...was it one of those fund-raising "Trojan" Milk Chocolate & Almond bars? I am soooo embarrassed..Me? OMG! I have some vague memory of this...Did I really do this and drag you along with me?

Just one more thing that I must confess to my Mother and find some way to atone for my misdeeds. Woe is me!

the golden horse said...

Is it possibly the same girl that played hooky at a SSS convention in Columbus with some other girls and got a ride in a nice red Olds Convertible? But I don't know, just something I heard. Yeah right.
At least she had the right answer when the sponsor asked about the candles. LOL.
I still giggle when I think of it after all these years.

BoMarGirl said...

GH - Don't you remember how bored we were at that SSS Meeting? I remember the speakers talked about candles during the morning session. So, Fly & I told the ONLY thing that we remembered from the convention. MAN! It was so bad that your eyes were just tiny blurred slits (I remember how you looked that day). I think the Good Lord was taking good care of us and helped us out. We walked out of the morning session right to a red convertable with cute guys....now I don't think even Vera would have turned THAT down, do you GH?

So,that SSS Meeting didn't turn out so bad after all did it? Kinda makes you wish to attend another one!???

Fly - Don't like to hear you are confessing....I"M NOT!! Don't know a thing about anything; can't remember.

Don't forget that PT is going to be a paralegal. Practice the line, "I can't recall".

Bo, you are SO right to be concerned about my paralegal knowledge.

After all I've see every episode of Law & Orders, LA Blues, NYPD Blues, Miami Vice, and Car 54 Where Are You. (And then there was that time I was in Sing Sing but we won't discuss that here.)

Yep, I know a LOT of legal stuff

Since I've been in school all of 3 weeks, let’s review what I know:
there is Constitutional Law, Common Law, Statutory Law, and Murphy's Law and a few other rules.

As for bored SSS girls and teenage boys in a red convertible, I believe the Law of Nature applies and takes precedent over all others; there was nothing Mrs. Fulmer could have done about it except smile and remember herself at that age.

How's that?? ;)) Am I getting my money’s worth or what?!!

BoMarGirl said...

Oh, I can tell you are getting your money's worth; especially when you use legal words like "precedent".

I need to know if you have learned about the Statute of Limitations.

the golden horse said...

BMG
Oh that was such a great time. I was so lucky, I was never questioned about the alleged incident. I would have pleaded the fifth or gave my famous dumb, I don't know a thing look.
But I would do it again in a heartbeat.
PT
With all that pent up knowledge you have, I think you could pass the test now.
As for all those laws..don't forget the Law of Hormones. LOL.

Purple Tabby said...

Bo, we haven't studied the Statue of Limitations yet but I saw a picture of it.

It's so beautiful standing in NY harbor.

Law of Hormones - Sparkley Balls

Any connection???

TD

I think you are on to something there. I've got my sparkley balls hanging from a desk lamp. Good girl scout...always prepared.

BoMarGirl said...

I'm so impressed. Seriously, PT, only 6 weeks of Paralegal Class and you know that the Statute of Limitations is located in New York Harbor...we all knew you would be a success at whatever you endaevor.
