Of All Things . . . .

A little nostalgia . . . .
I just read in today’s paper that Cowboy Bob and Janie (from 1960’s channel 4 TV fame)
Have re-released their 1968 Christmas Album, “Merry Christmas from Janie and Cowboy Bob” on CD. Also, they are making a personal appearance in Nashville, IN. today to promote the CD. Don’t know how big of a turnout they’ll get due to the weather, though.
You may remember that Cowboy Bob (Bob Glaze) was also on ChuckWagon Theater and later Cowboy Bob’s Corral. He is about 5 yrs older then us ’65 grads. Bob graduated from the Culver Military Academy in 1960.

What ever happened to the locally produced Kid's shows? Most cities had them... there was a show called "Cookie and the Captain" here that stayed on TV until about 1980, with a similar format to the shows we grew up with... cartoons, The Little Rascals, and obviously locally written skits.

Now it's Oprah, Montel, Maury, etc. on the Networks.

Did cable/satellite TV kill them?
I guess Nickelodeon, Disney, and Noggin are just impossible to compete with.

How sad.

I think it's all about the money!
The bigger networks had the money to tape, promote and syndicate the shows. Whereas these smaller stations did not have the funds.

I read where WTTV-Channel 4 back in the 60's & 70's did not archive their old programs or sporting events and for various reasons, these programs have been lost or destroyed or were never put on tape in the first place, so there are no copies of their local programs in existence. I’m sure many local stations, back then, did the same, either from ignorance or no funds.
And that's sad, too.

I think the other problem with WTTV 4 was that it was privately owned by Sarcis Tarzien (spelling) and he was big in electronics. He owned a company in Bloomington that I called on in the mid 70's. They remained independent while the other channels (3 at the time?) became affiliated with networks. They did eventually get bought out and became affiliated with some other group, but they couldn't make up for lost time (to paraphrase an article at the time). The channel 4 property was just sold a year or two ago 9-12 acres and the old building. Don't recall who bought it or what the intent was for its use. Here's the real stinker in the whole thing. As GB mentioned,I too remember Les the cartoon man and the little rascals, Harlow Hickenlooper (saw him years later, he was pretty successful in advertising) and all the other original ones; I'm sure you do too. I actually bought my old horse Poco from a guy that lived right next door to channel 4. His last name was Thompson and he owned Thompson Poultry ....He also lied to me about old Poco .... I am pretty sure that he doped him before I went up for the "test ride" because I can tell you the horse I rode at his place (docile, gentle, you had to kick him to make him trot) was NOT the horse that arrived at our place in the valley.
That's another story, but channel 4 does bring back a lot of memories.
Last thought; I'm still not sure how we lived through all those violent cartoons and three stooges movies ..... maybe That's why I have a warped since of humor, or maybe it was my first grade teacher....

dj,
Anytime you want, feel free to tell us the whole story on Poco. I for one would love to hear it, and I know there are other horse lovers here who would enjoy it also.
