1963?

I have no information as to the "where or when" of this image... Wish I did.
My Dad, a lineman for Indianapolis Power and Light Company, talked often about that snowstorm of 1963 and how he experienced the exact circumstances shown by this photo.
Seeing it made me smile.

Fry Rd. wasn't quite that bad but it seemed like it. Fly and I were so bored I remember walking east on Fry and there was only a narrow path down the center with high snow drifts on each side. No traffic at all could get through. Dad, Sam, and Mr.J were all in nicotine withdrawal....dad had some cigars and pipe tobacco so Dad, Sam and Mr. J tried to roll their own cigarettes!

P.S. Where is Mr. V?

Could have been 63 right here in Indiana for sure. I was on the fan bus that Bob Briggs drove home and it took 3-4 hours to get to our place on Morgantown Rd. Heard it took another 6-7 hours or so to get to Bargersville. I was still in Indy in 78, and that was interesting too. They talk about wind chill now and won't let kids go outside and wait for the bus etc. I remember the thermometer outside our living room window showing a -20 on one of the days they couldn't get the buses through, and we put on extra layers of clothes before we went outside. As I recall 30-45 minutes at a time was about all that we were good for. Somehow those old black buckle up the front boots just didn't do to much to keep the COLD out. Thanks for the post GB.
Bo; Mr V is at Forest Lawn in a mausoleum on the last row facing South.. They could help you locate it.

Thanks dj for telling me where to find Mr.V; I will look for him there.

Clint and I were just talking this week about never remembering school closing because it was too cold. We were tough in those days - HAH!!

'63 and '78 - both big snows! Stranded in both of them. In '63, stranded in a good place. Carol and Sandy's Mother & Dad's place in the country. Stuck for 2-3 days, I think. Mostly a blur now. I remember the hospitality well, though. In '78, not such a good place! Stuck in a truck for 3 days waiting on one lane of I-80 to get cleared. In places, drifts looked just like the picture. So far in Indy, we've had more ice and cold than usual. A couple of snows, but have not even had my snow blower running yet. If we make it another month - we all can start looking forward to spring. For those of us not in Arizona of Florida - That's good news... Don't hunt anymore, don't ski and do not like to play in the snow. Winter for me is blah!!!! It does bring on the New Year - but, really, '09 is the year that I have been waiting on. Now, the years can stop flying by....

Bad news it is a telephone pole. It was called open wire. The lines were all party lines. The snow in 64 was State tourney time. Yes 2dog was at Carol and Sandy's house. Carol was at my house. Was I lucky or what. The snow of 78 is why i'm in Florida. Stuck in a man-hole for 23.5 hours. Pay was good.
Carol help....

Thanks HF for the clarification. The reason I put the ? behind 1963 was that I wasn't sure. No matter. We all remember it and have stories to tell because of it.

I still remember the canyon cleared on Smith Valley Road, somewhere around McCarty's farm...
The snow had to be 12' high there, and they dug a one-lane clearing through it. As I recall you couldn't see traffic coming from the opposite direction while passing through, so you had to go slowly.

Question for all:
Anyone know if there is any value to the insulators shown in the photo? I have access to a bunch of 'em.

GB, I think if you checked it out that you would find them selling at flea markets for a few bucks apiece. My mom bought one and gave it to me Years ago, and they were scarce then. Might be a pleasant surprise if you could find a niche to sell them.

GB Just for the heck of it I checked ebay under "light pole insulators collectables" and there are a bunch priced from $0.99 to $418.00 each. Alot to do with color and of course the type. Good Luck!

Thanks DJ.
I took a look too and have no idea what kind these are, but I'm now motivated to possibly become an EBay seller!
(How many of those suckers can I unscrew from the pole in an hour?)

I read up on those insulators once. Companies like Ball made them out of scrap glass and such. That's why there are different colors, but I think the greenish-blue are the most common. They say if you dig around telephone poles you can find them too. But I'll pass on that method.
