The Edge of Night

Home from school... dump the books and get ready to deliver "The Indianapolis News" to 47 customers. Of course the TV would be on in the background, whether or not someone was watching it. At that time of day the last of the day's six or so hours of "Soap Operas" would be on...
If my "recollector" is correct, it would be "The Secret Storm", or,
"The Edge of Night" playing as I got ready to go back out the door.

I no longer watch much network TV, but I heard the reports when "The Guiding Light" and "As The World Turns" were taken off the air.
I used to watch "The Young and the Restless" because there were a couple actresses I found attractive on that show...
(Does anyone else watch TV with the sound muted?) A quick search shows it's apparently still a part of CBS TV's lineup, and for heaven's sake, I see the gal that played Mrs. Chancellor when I first saw the show is still part of the cast! She must be taking her Geritol!

Soap operas, game shows, children's programming, News, Weather, and Sports...
We've talked about it before... the role early TV played in our lives. Captain Kangaroo and Mr. GreenJeans were aimed at a younger audience than the class of '65, but we watched as we got dressed for school and Mommanurse loved that program. (Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Moose, and Grandfather!)
Got a memory you'd like to share?

It's a week until Christmas, folks.
Be safe, please.

I just watched the cast list for "The Edge of Night" and saw some familiar names there...
Hector Elizondo, Barry Newman, and Bill Macy. Lots and lots of folks kept food on their tables playing in these things while waiting on the big break to come their way, didn't they?!

I did watch Captain Kangaroo and even watched it with my kids. But I hated cartoons as a kid. Loved the Mickey Mouse Club and thought Cubby was cute.

But my faves were on Saturday afternoons. I loved Roy Rogers, Sky King, and anything "sci-fi". Not a normal little girl, I guess. I would've kicked Dora the Explorer to the curb.

Soupy Sales was hilarious--at least he was back in the 50's. His later stuff sucked. But that durned White Fang. Nothing funnier.

We also would all sit down with Mom when Mitch Miller was on. We even had a Mitch Miller songbook, and sang along like we were part of "The Gang". I still remember a lot of those old songs.

Remember Tom Terrific and his might dog Manfred? That was on Captain Kangaroo too. There was a character on Tom Terrific called "Crabby Appleton". I also happened to have a great-grandmother Apple. I couldn't seem to be able to call her "Granny Apple" like the rest of the family...I called her "Crabby Appleton".

I think I must've watched Mighty Mouse from time to time. "Here he comes to save the day".

I now know for certain that I was the retarded child in the class of '65. I LOVED Captain Kangaroo and Grandfather (the clock). Oh, and Bunny Rabbit too.

I have watch The Y and the R since day one. Still the best on the air.
The cartoons of our days were the best also. Today's cartoons don't seem to be funny. Just weird.
I do love Pinky and the Brain though, Bought the whole set.

Our Gang - aka "The Little Rascals"
One of best... Loved all of the characters. The dog 'Petey' - did he belong to anyone of was he just a neighborhood dog that tagged along? And didn't Butch have a dog? If you go back and analyze 'Our Gang' - in a lot of ways - we kind of fit..

Good stuff

I would like to be Darla; "Tools" is Alfalfa.

"Our Gang" aka 'The Little Rascals'.. In my opinion (I know - that doesn't count for much),that show was one of the best. Loved all of the characters. In many ways, we kind of fit. We could have been TV stars! The character 'Butch' had a dog - Petey was afraid of him. Petey changed through the years, like most of the other characters. The earlier episodes were sometimes better than the later ones - but, it was a great series. Watched it as much as I could. Every once in a while, still see it pop up. One of my favorites was the one where the gang came upon the folks that were being baptized in the creek. There was another one about a pirate and his stash that the gang had stumbled upon. So many good ones.... OK, Bo, You can be darla if you want. Tools would fit in, for sure - but, I think Chip would make a better Alfalfa

Funny TD...
So much of that show is still with me/us!
Remember the episode with "Uncle George"...
YumYum! Eat 'em up! Eat 'em up!!"

Or- "That's a GOP!", referring to a picture of an elephant.

When someone asks me to make a wish I still frequently say "I wish Cotton was a monkey!"

And even Sara Jean has learned...
When I ask, "Isn't that right Uh-Huh?", her response is:
"Uh-Huh!"

(Others may not see the humor, but I CRACK MYSELF UP!)

Related, and of interest here.

Oh yea.. "YumYum! Eat 'em up! Eat 'em up!!" That was another good one. Most of the original one were great. Those kids were great little actors. For the most part, though, they were just being in the moment and that is what made it so good. I'm sure the plots were scripted, but I gotta believe that the acting was not edited much. I also think that several of the Vandy's Kids would fit the 'Our Gang' characters pretty well.

That's funny.. When Cinders says "Isn't that right Uh-Huh?", my response is "Uh-Huh!"

Those shows DO fit with "Our CG Gang" don't they? That's so funny!
You are right TD; Chip would be Alfalfa....just thinking of "Tools" big grin I guess.

Do you remember the teacher asking one of the students to use "isthmus" in a sentence? It may have been Alfalfa who said, "Ith muth be my lucky day!"

I say that to myself sometimes because I don't think anyone thinks about that but me....guess I was WAY wrong; and yes I still say YUM YUM EAT 'EM UP too.

Poor Clint; when I think about it, the guy is living with a true nut case. HAH!

The great part about YumYum-eat em up- was that it was Spankey's Uncle George (the wild man from Borneo) and of course (Yum=Yum) that's what he called candy.

Hey, what about the He-man woman haters club?

It was always a great episode when they decided to build a hot rod so they could go race Waldo. Remember when went boat racing against Waldo?

I hate tospoil this but I am 84 years old and that series was new when I was a kid. All the things you saw were old clips of what they made . I know I was at least 10 when I first saw them on the movie screen. NMSR

Okay Mom, how does that spoil anything? And where do you see anyone claiming "The Little Rascals" were a new phenomenon when we were watching?
Methinks you misread, Mother.

Hmmm, now this is very interesting. You see, my mother told me the same thing; but it was many years ago when we watched the "Little Rascals". I'm going to talk with her and ask her why she told me that....I bet I can tell you what she'll say. "BO, I just wanted you to know you weren't seeing the entire films so you would know the TV folks weren't showing you the entire show." It's our mothers way of giving us a heads up and teach us that things are not always the way they appear. Get it?

By the way, our mothers were pretty smart cookies. I don't know how they did it but those women had a communication system better than the CIA and the FBI. From County Line Road to Bargersville was some kind of "Hot Line". My mother knew what my friends and I had been up to by the time I got home. Many times she wasn't real quiet about it either! That woman still scares me!

Bo, wish our mothers had passed alone how they did that. Carol learned hou to question the kids. I would just listern to her question them and I would confess for them. I know better than let her quiestion me. I have told the kids the FBI trained her and the CIA call her for advise. HF

HF,

WOW...your kids are lucky to have you by their side! Can't quite picture either you or Carol getting really ugly with kids.

Well at least you are smart enough to catch on...do you just quietly slip out of the room when you are about to be questioned? Mr. Clint is a MASTER at that routine. Sometimes by the time I find him I can't remember what I was upset about...HAH!

Bo,
It did not take me long to find some other place to be. I learned how to fix alot things in the shop.
With the kids I was the mean person, with the grandkids all I say is yes. (and laugh at their parents) Took them to see a movies today 65 degrees outside, The Frog and the Princess. I was good. but not to good for kids. They didn't get alot of things in it. Gave them popcorn cokes candy and sent them home. (ha) HF

HF. Yea, that's where 'ol Clint hides out too; I think it's a man's cave!
Oh, it's good to hear that you are just what a grandpa is supposed to be...ain't is great?
