How Things Have Changed!

It would normally be on a Summer Friday or Saturday night-

"(Greybeard), check the total for me!"
The old cash register at the "Frostop" had a little door just above the keys that you could lift to expose a window that, when reset the night before, would show the day's total receipts.

"$112.oo"...
And there would be a celebration... business had been wild and we were exhausted from pushing hamburgers, pork tenderloins, and ice-cold root beer out the door, but WOW!
$112.00!

And from that total would be paid rent, insurance, power, gas, supplies to replenish inventory, cleaning supplies, wages, and a maintenance reserve.

Today, $112.00 covers a good meal and tip for two people at a 3-Star restaurant.
How times have changed, huh?

We're still shy a pilot, so I'm still working my tush off... (except the weather has kept us on the ground for three days straight.)
I wish I had good news to share, but in my opinion the best news of the decade happened last Tuesday, and you may not agree with me at all on that issue.

April and the Eufaula pilgrimage will be here before we know it. Remember H&C need your $200-per couple deposit by 28 February or so. YOU ARE PLANNING ON COMING, AREN'T YOU?
(Don't make me come over there to talk to you personally!)

Okay VK's...
Surely one of you has something exciting to share, right?

Spent many hours working at the Frostop the summer of my 16th year.
Jack K came in and gave me a silver dollar and 16 cents for my birthday. Thought I had gone to heaven. Still have the silver dollar.

I remember you mixing a huge vat of root beer one day when I stopped in.

Carol and I are going just to let you know. It was 70 today..... I never got to see the little window at the Frostop. I did see the window at Waldon's Drug Store. I did sweep that floor many times. Would get off at 10 to go pick Carol up at the Frostop. Hope to see everyone at Eufaula. It is going to be Great....

I would like to send my money for the Eufaula trip but I need some kind of address to send it to. I'm in Florida right now with no info with me.
GB got me a job at the Frost Top. When I went for the interview I backed into the owner's car. No damage. I still got the job. Really enjoyed working there.

Funny-
Two couples care enough about me to unite in long-lasting marriages on my Birthday...
But both couples got married knowing I absolutely COULD NOT attend their weddings!
(I was halfway around the world in Chu Lai Viet Nam on my 22nd b-day, 25 January 1969.)

Still, I'm thrilled I don't have to worry about forgetting the date. And 41 years?
Wow.
Just wow!
Congrats, you "GB birthday wedding folks"!

Ruminating...
(Now there's a word that's fun to say. Say it with me...
Ru-min-a-ting!)
Ruminating on the birthday greetings I received... (Thank you all!), a few brain cells fired and I was taken back to 4th or fifth grade. At that time I realized my birthday was bookended by two others...
Jackie P. and Gary S.
Jackie's b-day was on the 24th.
Gary's was on the 26th... today.
(Echo, isn't Gary your cousin?)
If any of you are still in touch with these guys, call and give them our good wishes please.
Then let them know they need to send Harry a check for $200 so they can come visit with us in Eufaula Alabama in April!

Happy Birthday GB
Happy Anniversary to Two Dogs & Mrs and Hawkeye and Mrs.

Yes, Gary is a distant cousin. Distant enough that it was OK to date Ron and go to Junior prom.

I too have some fond memories of the Frost Top. Living in Mt. Pleasant it was so easy to get to. "I do have one not so happy memory though." I met my first husband, who shall remain un-named there. I sure didn't know at the time I would end up married to him then.

GB, when you mentioned the big day of $112.00 in sales for one day it made me think of something. In 1971 I was a single mother with no child support. I made $120.00 a week gross. I paid, rent, car payment, utilities, gas, medical insurance, babysitting and misc expenses. Unbelievable to think that was possible. Today my gas bill for one month is twice that amount.

Shifty and I won't be able to make the April trip. He won't be able to get off work. But will be thinking of all of you.

Shifty and I went to Florida over the holidays and found a home that we really would love to buy. Only problem is we need to sell out home in Edinburgh (right away) in order to get it.

SO IF ANY OF YOU KNOWS SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN BUYING PLEASE TELL THEM WE HAVE A HOUSE OF SALE.
Any referrals would be appreciated.

Five acres, wooded, 30" x 48" barn, large fenced area so could have horses. In Shelby County so taxes are (MUCH)lower then Johnson County.

Oh yes, and does anyone know the date of the Alumni Banquet yet?

Echo and Shifty

Hi Gang...Bo here,
Echo, I haven't been able to see your home in Edinburgh but it sounds wondeful. I bet someone will be very interested in it when you put it on the market.

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to GB, Hawkeye and Two Dogs.

I've been looking at the Eufala trip. From Phoenix to Montgomery the flight is $$$$ then it's 75 miles to Eufala by car. I would really love to meet up with you all there but it doesn't look good. My sister in laws are coming to visit the week before and will be leaving the 7th.
This trip sounds like a ball and I really want to join you but it looks like I'll just have to hear about it from you all.

We should be home for the Alumni Banquet. I'm like Echo and would like to know the date. Last year it was held on the last Sat. in April I think. I'll try to contact CGHS and see if I can get the date.

Love & hugs
Bo

Good luck on selling your home, Echo. It's beautiful, so I'll keep my fingers crossed you'll be able to move it in what may be a difficult market.

If you have any way to contact him, could you call Gary and touch base? The upcoming Alumni Banquet would be a grand time to see him (and others) for the first time in ** years! (Have him rattle Ron's cage too!)
The Banquet is the easiest way to get back in touch with schoolmates, (and the food normally is pretty good!) Barring something unforeseen, Sara Jean and I will be there, Spring OR Summer. Others, whose schedules are not so flexible as ours may need a "heads up" in order to work it into their schedules. Let's start laying the groundwork for a good turnout for the class of '65's 45th anniversary and a face-to-face of VK's that so far have been unable to get together.

I tried to call Dan... got Edna instead, but she's forwarding my message to him and I'm hopeful he'll call before I have to leave home this morning. Thanks Bo, for calling CGHS...
Surely someone will be able to clue is in on the date!

Hi Gang....
I just talked with Jeff Beck. He says the date of the Alumni Banquet is June 12...second Saturday of June. He told me he will call me back if finds out that date is incorrect.

Jack Russell is President of the Alumni Assoc. now by the way.

See ya
Bo

Greybeard said...

Thanks Bo.
Just got off the phone with Dan and he didn't know, so it's good to have a firm date to start planning.
The job coordinating this banquet has to be a thankless one, so we all owe a debt to Jack R. for taking on the task.

June 12.
Mark your calendars.
We've had a great time the last couple years!

GB,
I'm sure you are O SO RIGHT on the Alumni banquet being a thankless job. ALL kinds of complaints from the Alumni are heard.... entertainment, food, location, etc.I don't think I could handle it. I hope someone will have thick skin and be able to continue the tradition.
AND you are so right once more; many thanks to Jack are in order for sure.
Bo

Hawkeye and Two Dogs Happy Anniversary, GB Happy Birthday.
Just got your check Hawkeye. You are the first one in. H&C

Cissy Apple said...

Oohhh...thanks for the reminder! We're still in, and I'll get that check written tonight and in the mail tomorrow.

There will be fishing? Love to fish for bass, love to fry it up fresh, and love to eat it even more.

Anonymous said...

Cissy, Shifty and I love to bass fish also. We have a boat and it hasn't been on the water in over two years. Have you ever gone rought camping and cooked bass over an open fire? If not it's heaven.

Shifty and I have tried to find anyone who likes to boat and fish to go with us over the years. But can't seem to find any takers. Seems like alot of the gals consider the Holiday Inn running out of hot water as rough camping. If any of you are interested in boating and fishing just let us know this summer and we can get together.

GB, I will try and get in touch with Gary. Haven't seen or talked to him in years. As far a Barb and Ron are concerned. I have tried to get them to come to the mini's. Made personal calls etc. but as you know with no luck. But I will try again for the Alumni Banquet.

Just a little up date. Sophie who was Wylee's kennel mate is finally adjusting to her being gone. We have made her a house babie. She is loving it. Of course with the cold weather they are (all) in. I can imagine I am going to be on their poop list when the weather changes and they go back to the kennels. We are preparing outselves for 2010 to be another year of loss even if we don't want to think about it. Kage is 12, having problems, Sophie is way over weight and had surgery in Dec. Blaz is also going down hill. They are both 10 years old.
Good old Lacy is hanging in there. But 12 and 10 are getting up there for Brittany's.

Don't forget to spread the word about our house for sale. I know the (old folks) are set but you may know some young ones who are looking for a home (AT A REALLY GOOD PRICE.)

Love to all
Echo

Well, Echo...can't say that I've actually been "rough" camping. The closest I came was one Labor Day weekend at Boggs where the only frills I had was an extension cord running into my tent where I could plug in a little black 'n' white TV set. It rained nearly the entire weekend and was chilly, but that was the most fun I've had camping so far. It did finally clear on Sunday morning and we took off in my brother-in-law Joe's fishing boat.

The best part of the weekend was when the boat sidled up to the dam, and I cast the rubber worm perfectly--right up to a log at the dam. A big ol' bass hopped right on it. And Joe, who's quite a fisherman, started whining, "I was going to cast there!"

Anyway, probably as long as we could keep a campfire going to ward off Sasquatch, I'd be ok to camp in the wild.

Never fried fish on an open fire, but we used to have backyard campfires where we cooked beans over an open fire.

Anonymous said...

Cissy,
Electricity and TV - not quite rough camping HAHA.
Loved your fish story. Bet if you hadn't caught that fish Joe wouldn't have been casting there.

I know that VK has a lot of fishermen/women. It would be fun to post funny fishing stories. I have a couple of good ones myself I would love to share.

I don't believe we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. But it would be great if we could meet and maybe get together this summer and go fishing. What do ya think??

GB, what do you think of a fishing story posting so we can all get some good laughs?

DJ, how's that little cat doing you adopted?

Echo

Hey Echo,

Thanks for asking, he is doing quite well, now demands to come in the house and explore (When Buddy is in the backyard) and likes to be held while I watch TV in the kitchen at the end of the counter. He still needs a new home, the one that was going to take him is questionable whether they can right now and I can't combine the two (dog and cat) just won't work. He acts like he has been inside before but no way to know. Uses litter box and all and likes to stretch and roll on the floor and play with dry food or anything else that might be on the floor and can be batted around with paws. Anyone out there that could give him a GOOD home?

dj

Anonymous said...

dj, has he been neutered? Do you have any idea how old he is? Has he had his front claws removed?

"Being held while I watch TV?"
Batting food while stretching and rolling around on the floor?

Uhh...
Sounds to me like he has a FINE home already!
(And you'll miss him when he's gone!)
Thanks for being a good sam., DJ.

Ferdy,

He still has 'original equipment' claws etc. and he is probably about 9 months to a year old. Very sweet kitty and won't be that big. He was out at the barn and starving to death so I don't know how old for sure, but he is a smart little fellow. Had to be to survive for as long as he did.

dj

P.S. I asked him about the neutering thing and he didn't show much interest in it.

Anonymous said...

Not interested in being neutered, huh? Imagine that!!

Well everyone, keep your fingures crossed and say a prayer for Shifty and me. We have a couple coming Wed. to see the house. They seems really interested.

IF everything goes through we will be Florida home owners. At least we will be closer to all the fishing get togethers. The house is in Lakeland Florida. I have some great pictures of it. But don't want to jinx anything.

If everthing goes through Shifty plans to stay in Indy and work at least through the summer. So we will be looking for something to rent for awhile here. Still trying to play catch up from him being off work for six months. Of course I can take my business to Fla. thanks to the internet. Sure would love to retire though. Anyone interested in buying and Advertising Specilaties business?

We will only be about 40 miles from Tampa and the Gulf. A great place for some of you to come and visit.

DJ, good luck on finding the little guy a home. Have you tried letting the poop hound and cat get together? They may like each other and he won't have to have a new daddy? HAHA

Echo,
Good luck on the house!

The problem with the cat and dog together is that the dogs at the barn were always after the cat and he just doesn't share a great love for puppy dogs right now. Buddy and the Kitty seem to be considerably more relaxed viewing each other through the patio door, so sometime in the future we might introduce them into the same room (on opposite sides of the room). Mostly it's just the newness for both of them. Time will tell, but I do need to take the Kitty to the "Clinic" to get him worked on.

Thought he wasn't interested in being "worked" on? Haha! I wish I could take him; but, I'm just not home enough to have a pet. I love cats and dogs. They give so much love. And, they deserve so much love in return.
