Fly Here!
There are so many times that I find myself missing my old stomping grounds & the VK's; this is another one. What fun it would have been to go to Franklin and see General Marty in action!

PT, thanks for posting this article & pic. I feel like I know a celebrity! I'll be showing this to my Mom...she's going to really get a kick out of it.

And General M is just as cute as he was in '65.

Thank you so much for filling us in on Marty's speech. I bet it was awesome. What an wonderful person to be able to call a classmate of ours.

Mrs. Hawkeye here....
I was so honored to be at the Veterans Day Luncheon with Hawkeye, Steve & Jeanie W, & Mr. & Mrs. Legan where Major General R. Martin Umbarger spoke. To be in the company of so many of our active and retired service men and woman was awesome. A true feeling of patriotism was in the air.

The Major Generals speech was wonderful. He began with Patrick Henry (this man is in Hawkeye's family tree!) and continued with George Washington, World Wars I & II, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. He said people in the past joined the National Guard mainly to use the educational benefits. Now, the reason is that their country needs them.

One man was recognized, in his uniform, for being in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. This man was probably 80 years old. When the honor guard brought in the American Flag, I was in a position to see his feet. He marched in place with honor guard. This was so heartfelt for me.

I wish you all could have been there! The Major General is a true patriot and American. I feel honored to know him and many others, I am married to one, who have served our country in the military. Freedom is not free. Thank you.
