"I Will Have Milk"
It's a phrase that has stuck with me all these years. Someone still in contact with Rick P. please ask him if he still remembers saying it...
He heard it in a movie or cartoon and liked it enough he said it over and over...
Apparently the character was in a bar and was asked what he wanted to drink. The response?
"I will have milk." And the phrase was said in a lilting way...
The first three words in rising pitch, with the last, "milk", at a lower pitch than the first. It WAS funny when Rick said it!
(Another phrase he picked up that I know he heard on some cartoon was "Why-for did you bury me in this COLD, COLD ground?" )
Isn't it odd that those things are memories that pop up for me now and then?
Do you remember the "Golden Guernsey Dairy"?
Someone help me with exactly where it was...
My vague memory of it was somewhere in the Southport area on the West side of a major arterial street. I thought the cows were beautiful... a golden caramel color and white. The milk was good too. But maintaining a dairy is hard work for little money, so I'm not surprised "Golden Guernsey" is long-gone, and that land is now covered with homes.
But the memory remains.
Got something, anything to contibute?
I think TD and Cinders are in Southern Florida.
Tonight is the night of the B-Ball game in the old gym.
Me? I'm stuck in an endless loop... work, sleep, work, sleep, work...
You can brighten my day and stimulate our lives by sharing your news!

Rita's in sunny Fort Myers. Sitting on my lanai. (that's a fancy screened porch in So. Florida language). Unfortunately we have to head back home on Sunday. Hate the thought of another long dreary cold Indiana winter.
GB,
The Dairy was located on Emmerson Ave.and Southport Rd. I loved those pretty cows too.
TONIGHT THE TROJANS PLAY WARREN CENTRAL in Football for the right to go to State Finals. Game starts at 7:00 p.m. Stand and sing "Onward Trojans" loud and proud. Warren Central beat C.G. in the regular season; so it's gonna be tough.
I think the Bball game is Dec. 5th.
Bo
You're right Bo...
December 5th is the date.
Unfortunately, I'm working both nights.
Weather has now kept me on the ground five straight nights. Thank God for bein' able to surf the net!
The phrase "I will have milk" was from a Bonanza episode where a non-drinking scandinavian gentleman entered a bar and ordered milk when the bartender said "what'll you have, Mister?" Rick and I were watching that episode in his uncle's trailer because he was the only person in Smith Valley with a color tv and Bonanza was the only color tv show.

Golden Gurnsey was off Emerson, between Stop 11 and Southport Rd. The McFarland family owned it and now is located in southern Johnson County, but does not have nearly the operation.
We used to have Maplehurst milk delivered to us and bread from the Omar bakery. I can still taste their pecan rolls.

"Hey Mom, Oh Mom...
Here comes the O-Mar man!"
I remember the milk cooler box that used to sit on the front porch, ours was a double because we got two gallons of milk delivered, I remember carrying in the 2 glass jugs one time and wondering what it would sound like if I clanged these two G L A S S jugs together. The good news is the stupid little dumbass only broke one of the jugs, the bad news, it was on the living room carpet. Did I mention what a dumb little kid I was?
When I was growing up we had a big cooler that held 2 - 5 gallon plastic jugs of milk. It has a long tube that slid into the dispenser and the end was cut. Then you just raised the handle and milk would come out of the tube. We went through 10 gallons of milk a week that was delivered on Tuesdays and Fridays. I remember once I invited all the neighbor kids in and gave them all a glass and we ended up drinking all the milk. I can't remember if I had to go and pick my own switch over this one or if I got the belt. All I know is I didn't offer milk to drink any more.
Hope everyone has a Very Happy & Safe Thanksgiving.

Fly Here...long time no blog! Funny you should be asking about Golden Guernsey and I checked in. My dad worked there! I was born when my family lived on the farm. We lived there until I was about 4 or 5...then moved to Greenwood. Lots of memories there for my family (I was a little young to remember much of it). HOWEVER, I do remember one day when they were cutting the horns off the cows. My brother and I were afraid of "blood"...ha! My mom made us stay inside on our back porch while the de-horning was going on. I remember red checked curtins and the fear of "blood". We lived there in the mid 40's to the early 50's. This was one of the first real jobs that my dad had. I had pet chickens...got the pics to prove it. The Grabels (sp) were a really odd bunch as some stories go... One of the sons had an air plane that flew in & out of the farm. There is a housing development on part of the farm: MacFarland (something). It's near Interstate 65 and there's a Hampton Inn and Steak & Shake there. Days gone bye...
Golden Guernsey milk is the reason I no longer drink milk. Sure, the little triangular milk cartons were cool, but one day in grade school I was sipping away on my morning carton of GG white milk when I started really looking at the logo. It was a circle with a golden guernsey cow--complete with udders. I got to thinking about where that milk came from, and that's the day I quit drinking white milk. Still can't tolerate it to this day--unless it's doctored up with chocolate syrup...or some Half-and-Half with a generous pouring of Kalua. After all, chocolate milk doesn't come out of an udder, does it?
Fly Again- Cissy, love your "hate milk" story! I have always hated milk! I can still smell the ucky, milky dairy odor...I wouldn't even drink it as a baby! Mom says that I would drink buttermilk, but not whole milk. She would have to cut the holes in my bottles big enough for the buttter milk to go through! Funny how some little something can influence a kid! "Utter-ly" facinating!
Cissy mentions being put off because milk comes from udders. Fly makes a passing reposte, ("Utter-ly").
Were you two formula fed as babies?
(Seems to me there's an interesting psychiatric "milk hating" study here!)
Fly Again - I don't think we had formula...just bottled milk. If I didn't look so much like my brother & sister, I'd question my "Mom"...she went to work right after I was born, and I didn't see her much until I was older. Maybe I was found one day in the chicken coop. My sister took care of me, and my brother just tolerated me...ha!
I agree with you about a psychiatric "milk-hating" study. Funny, my brother was NOT milk fed and he Loves milk! Utter-ly fascinating...ha!
