Fixin' to Get Ready

It won’t be long until I head out for Indiana. Just thinking about cool weather, raking leaves, burning leaves, going to wiener roasts, picking apples etc sounds like heaven.

Of course,I started gathering things to take on this trip at least a month ago. There’s boxes of stuff for Mother, a box of goofy stuff for Abby Rose and Drew Michael (who are perfect in everyway), a box of cooking supplies and kitchen tools that may come handy and then there are at least 2 big boxes of things gathered for OJ Roast! I just can’t wait.

David J is making something that is so funny, I’m dying to tell y’all just how clever he is,,,,but he asked me not to tell. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he doesn’t have to figure out a way to mass produce his gift and market it world wide. EVERYone will want one.

Janet F. has her gift ready and OJ will love it, too. We’ve made 2 business cards for him. One says “:OJ SLOOP, Teacher, Mentor Friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but Tiger calls me Coach”
The other says “ Alektorophobia - Not just a phobia. It’s a way of life” and it shows a golfer about to swing ,,,a small chicken is on the tee.

Bev. H, Janet B and Vicki are working on a special presentation for OJ ,,, a thanks from all of us for his military service in WWII. Vickie can’t join us but she is still sending ideas back and forth.

Jane Ann C is making a pile of math homework for us to turn in. I trust y’all can come up with a really good excuse for homework that is over 40 years late!

In other news, Janet B’s son, the Army Ranger, and his wife are due to have twins in November! I hope ALL the grandparents bring their photo albums,,, this will be the last time you get to show off the grandbabies before Janet makes a super duper scrap book of the twins!

Jeanie and Steve will be going to North Carolina to she their granddaughter and Jane Ann and Guy will be in DC. Guy’s father passed away in July and they are planning a burial in Arlington Cemetery the end of October. It’s so sad to lose a parent but what an honor that he will rest in Arlington.

Mark G and his wife are planning to join us as is Linda B. Linda is collecting more OJ stories from Jerry Dunn so we should be able to roast him to a turn. Flygirl is still planning to be there but she has been helping a very ill friend get through a tough time and FG’s plans could change. Still I think she will make it to Indy.

I plan to bring a mini-cam with the goal of making CDs for everyone. Since I’ll be in Indy for a while, I may just visit some of the folks who can’t join us and get a few words of wisdom from them to add to the CD

Things we still need: Hotdogs, Chips, Salads, Buns, Drinks, Ice.
What am I forgetting? OHHHHHHHHHHH yeah The fixin’s for John T’s favorite drink!! Yeah, need to pack that!!! ;)

Someone needs to tell Top Cat that 3 people are making desserts especially for him,,, He needs to tell them if he has a preference otherwise he may end up with all the delightful things we had last time,,,, which is not a bad thing either.

Now I have ta pick out my wiener roast outfit. I AM the Fashion Police, after all!

Five years ago

For weeks following the 9/11 attacks, most of us were still reeling. Just a few weeks before it had been unthinkable that someone would attack the Pentagon, have the White House in their sights, and level the World Trade Center. What could happen next?

For classmate Mary Ella Royston Morris, that question would be answered subtly at first, close to home and closer to her heart; her husband came home from work at the Post Office with flu-like symptoms

Thomas L. Morris Jr. and a co-worker, Joseph Curseen were working at the Brentwood Processing and Distribution Center which handled most of D.C.’s mail. They were the first to die after exposure to anthrax laced letters

Two years after the tragedy, the Brentwood center was renamed the Curseen-Morris mail sorting facility in their honor

Oct 21., 2006 marks the five year anniversary of Thomas’ death and Mary will attend a D.C. memorial service honoring Thomas and Mr. Curseen. The TV show, Inside Edition, plans to interview her that weekend, as well.

Notes of support and encouragement can be sent to mrs_moe2@sbcglobal.net

Union, Nineveh, and Trafalgar

One of the blogs I read and enjoy is written by a guy that today is lamenting the fact that his High School is being closed. The census is such that there are not enough students to keep his school open.

I've written here on several occasions how I feel when I come home and see the dramatic changes...... and the whole area has changed so much that I get lost looking for old landmarks. But when I come home for the Alumni Banquet, the dinner is held on the grounds where I attended school for 12 years, and some of the same structures where we walked, learned, and played are still standing.

It set me to thinking. How do those folks that have experienced the loss of their schools feel? Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't Trafalgar, Union, Nineveh, (others?), all been consolidated into one school?
(Indian Creek? I'm not sure.)

I think having the school and it's traditions disappear completely would be another of those things that would make me melancholy. It's comforting to know that there is a continuing line of Trojans learning and graduating at the school I attended.

Maybe this is a subject we should ask O.J. and others to address in October? I'd be interested in hearing their views.

On The Back Burner....

Vandy's Kids are working behind the scene to plan upcoming events. The only event that is nailed down at this point is October at Indy Echo's. Please folks, review these possible plans and comment, so we can please the maximum number of people.
The list is by no means conclusive, so please add to or amend it as necessary:

October 21, 2006
Mini reunion at Indy Echo's house in Edinburgh. For planning purposes, please let IE know ASAP if you're gonna attend.

May 2007?
2nd Annual Grand Galveston Fishing Fiasco!
There was much talk about a co-ed affair, maybe a competition between the sexes next year. Should we Charter a boat large enough to handle all of us, or maybe one boat for the Queens, one for the Drones?

November 2007?
1st Annual Aloha Hawaii Trojan Invasion. We wanted to throw this out, knowing it will take considerable planning and financial adjustments. We're looking at several activities:
A better tour of Pearl Harbor than the public receives,
A day spent coasting down a volcano on bicycles,
Walking (rafting?) through lava tubes.
GH sent me a ton of material to review, and I'm still looking it over. If you've been to Hawaii and did something you truly enjoyed, please share some ideas here.

Most of you have read comments here indicating how wonderful our fellowship has been during these "Mini" reunions. It's hard to relate the emotions we've felt. You need to come!
I hope you'll use this information to begin planning to attend as many of these events as possible!

COOL MUSIC AND A SPARKLY BALL

We have been writing about how much music has influenced our lives alot over the past months and Monday night was no different for me.

I was taking a much needed rest from doing some packing and I sat down to do something I am so darn good at in the summer months. Channel surfing.

I stumbled across some music, good music... oh wait a minute...what is that.. I remember these songs.
I had come across PBS doing a night of Doo Wop's best. They had brought back several of the old groups and gosh, they sounded great.
The first song I got to hear was the Tokens "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", followed by the Diamonds with "Little Darlin", and the Zodiacs, then Mel Carter doing "Hold Me".
By the time they brought out Little Anthony and the Imperials I was beside myself.
They did "I Thinking I am Going out of My Head," "Shimmy Shimmy Coco Pop", and a few others.
I was visualizing our CGHS gym filled to the rafters, as usual, for our after game sock hops swaying back and forth polishing those belt buckles. I saw everyone on the floor doing the Cha Cha and I was in heaven.

There were several other groups and if you get to catch the show, take the time to sit back and relax and let the memories flow.

And yes, hanging from the ceiling... was my so precious Sparkly Ball tossing off reflections of days gone by. FF and BomarGirl would have been so proud.

Home

Another old Neil Diamond song:

"L.A.'s fine, but it ain't home.
New York's home, but it ain't mine no more."

There was never a bigger homebody than me......
I think I was 13 when we first ventured out of Indiana to visit relatives in Tennessee. I was homesick on that trip.
And it was worse than that: My life centered around the Valley. Getting wheels meant my comfort zone was extended as far as Greenwood at first, then eventually including Southern Naptown in my late teens.

All that changed in 1966 when Uncle Sam came calling.
Trips to my beloved home came as frequently as possible, but unless you are there experiencing the changes as they happen, returning is like visiting a foreign land. An attempt to return to my Grandparents home on Indianapolis' South Side was met with much frustration; the route there has been dissected by Interstate highways and I had to detour several times from my normal route in order to get there.

Where is home?
I've now lived in this Illinois town longer than I've lived anywhere else.
I'm comfortable here, but the strong ties........
the "have to get back home" feeling is not as strong as it was during my formative years in the Valley.

I don't know the answer to this question:
Can we ever go "home"?

Friends change.
Geography changes.
We change.
And all these changes are dramatic.

Maybe some, or most of my yearning is just a desire to return to the simpler times of my wonderful, carefree youth. But I can't imagine ever feeling about "Home" as strongly as I once did.

What a melancholy feeling!

Wotta Buncha Wimps!

98 Degrees here today, on Dr. Fahrenheit's scale. And they say it didn't break a record.......102 degrees, set back in 1940.
Global warming, my extra-warm and fuzzy backside!

Nowadays we run from our air conditioned Hupmobiles to the comfort of our air conditioned workplaces. Workday done, we run back to our cool cars.
From our driveways, we dash to our air conditioned homes.

Back to our growing up days.......our family never had A/C in our house. I can remember going to bed with perspiration flowing down the valley in my back, looking foward to turning on my window fan to draw in the cool night air from outside.
We survived.

I honestly don't remember the first house in our neighborhood to have air conditioning. I know my folks finally broke down and got a window unit sometime in the mid-70's. That was about the same time I got my first car with an air conditioner in it.

Can you imagine life now without an air conditioner?
Where's my Right Guard?

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE...........

Ah yes, a great song by Johnny Nash, probably his only great hit so many years ago.

Mr. GB has brought to light about the music and DJ's and Radio stations in our youth and it brought to mind...what little I have left... Is there one song out there that would represent your life or a series of them.

After great thought.. no comment here... I came to the conclusion depending on where my life was at the time that I had "Don't Worry Be Happy" times, and sometimes I was lost in "Maragaritaville" at others, then I had my "Hotel California" period depending on where I was living then.
Then sometimes I felt "Like A Rock", only to feel I was going "Against The Wind" others. I had "Night Moves" during other times when I felt like a "Freebird" and then there were times I couldn't even "Turn the Page".

Then there were the times I loved dancing to "Unchained Melody". Simply one of the best.

This even carried over to Christmas when my all time favorite carol is "O Holy Night". I have it on CD by about 12 artists, even in Hawaiian and Italian. I play it over and over during the Holidays. The Hawaiian version by Willie G hs got to be the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

So I guess all in all, my life has been motivated by music and still is. Can't imagine the world without it.

How about you, what songs really got to you.

Window On The World

It's a July Friday night......
Clear, warm, and dry.

I don't know about you, but in '63, '64, and '65, when these conditions prevailed, I'd frequently find myself in front of the WIFE "Window On The World" on North Meridian Street, writing a request and dedication on a piece of paper to show to the DJ.

I smile, thinking back on it.......
I never, ever felt threatened in downtown Indianapolis.
Maybe I was too naive to realize the danger there, but it was normal during the summertime to ride my motorcycle to town with my steady date behind me, even in the wee hours of the morning.

We've discussed WIFE's impact on our lives before.
It was a huge part of my life.......from the moment they started broadcasting and I switched from listening to WIBC.

How about you....
Any memories to share?

Florida Keys Fishing Report

Thanks to PT & GB I'm an Official Contributor to the VK Blog.

TD certainly was a welcome passenger, and proved to be one fine fisherman. As the story goes: It was a dark and stormy night....

Well, not exactly a dark and stormy or night, more like a slightly cloudy, slightly windy and slightly bumpy day on the water. After several hook ups and some "Rockin' & Reelin' " by the three of us, we headed back to shore with plenty of nice-size dolphin and a respectable-size black fin tuna.

TD reeled in many of the dolphin, the tuna and another "something or other" fish that was tossed back in to live on in the Atlantic. We all had our jobs to perform: Obviously, TD's main duty was to reel in as many fish as possible while keeping an eye out for birds, boards and other floating objects. I was at the helm trying to keep us close enough to the weed lines to lure the fish up without getting into them, while HB spent time reeling in our lines and removing all the weeds that I was unable to avoid...ha! Needless to say, HB was an excellent mate for the day, and TD and I kept him busy with baiting and re-baiting the lines and performing his de-weeding duties. HB did find time to reel in a few dolphin and managed to lose one or was it two, TD? All in all, it was a fine and fun day on the water. We caught enough fish (12 or so??) to make us happy, tire us out, and provide a wonderful dolphin-dinner for us that night. HB had hoped that TD would fish the next day, but TD opted (like the wonderful husband he is) to spend time with Mrs. TD back in Key Largo. TD made the correct decision because the weather was deteriorating and a tropical depression was headed our way. HB and Capt. Pete did go out the next day and caught more dolphin, but their day was cut short because of storms. They made it back to shore just before the weather got really nasty, and we spent the next couple of days on shore waiting for better weather. Eventually the storm passed, but the fishing was not the best. HB did catch a beautiful sail fish one day! Needless to say, HB was a very Happy Cappy! Unfortunately, I was not on board to take a photo of this exciting event... But I did manage to get TD to pose for a photo with a couple of his dolphin. So hats off to TD for joining us off shore and making our day a very special day. We hope to do it again!

Outta The Loop.....

Wowie!

I take off for a week to chase Canada Geese, and all Hell has broken loose.
I just started reading the comments to TD's Florida fishing review and realized you guys are 'way ahead of me! Gonna start a new line of commo here to see if we can begin to get a good feel for what is really goin' on here.

VK's, we really haven't had a chance to firm up Tool's plans for the next GGFF. I'll try to call him today, Saturday, to plant the seed. My taste of it when I last contacted him was that he'd love to have a co-ed GGFF, but obviously that will take a great deal of coordination from planners........chartering boats, lodging, etc., etc..

Exciting though, isn't it? Getting together is such fun.......
Someone schedule a midnight moonless snipe hunt, and I'll be there to enjoy the action and the socializing! (And I LOVE boobie prizes!)

Looks as if we already have more than enough participants to start the machinery rolling.....
More later after I've touched base with Galveston.

UPDATE, Sunday, 2 July:

No joy contacting Tools yesterday. Not surprising, with Freedom Festivals going on across the continent and families all sharing time together.
Thoughts for discussion......
Mrs Greybeard has absolutely no interest in fishing, but was excited about the idea of spending quality time around a pool with Mrs. TwoDogs and others. The obvious suggestion here is that just because there is a "frighteningly fierce fishing competition" going on here, there is no reason non-fishing classmates that simply want to provide moral support to their favorite team cannot come and root us on, right? I can say that I found Galveston quite lovely, and the fresh seafood there was wonderful. It's a wonderful place to just "be".
We'll all have a ball!

"When I'm 64"

Talk of Paul McCartney's 64th birthday brought back a strange memory.

I think it was late summer of '63...... someone correct me if I'm wrong.
WIFE had been running a promo on the Beatles.....

(Sung, as a jingle:)
"The Beatles,
The Beatles,
The Beatle, Beatle, Beatles.....
(this part was in spoken word, with an English accent:)
We really don't want to bug you about them, but they ARE too much!
(Jingle again:) Better look out for the Beatles!"

Apparently, WIFE had acquired the rights to be the first radio station to play The Beatles' first U.S. releases in our area. They announced they would be playing four Beatles records, and the audience would then vote on which tune was their favorite.

The afternoon came with much anticipation.
WIFE played the four records.....as I recall they were:

"I Want to Hold Your Hand",
"She Loves You",
"Please Please Me",
and "Love Me Do".

When they had played all four records, they broadcast a number to call to vote for your favorite.
Of the four, I liked "She Loves You" best. But when I tried to call the number to vote, I got a busy signal.
I hung up and tried again.
Busy again, but in the background, behind the busy signal, I could hear voices......
(Male voice:) Beep, What, Beep, Is, Beep, Your, Beep, Number?

Then, a Female voice: Beep, 8, Beep, 8, Beep, 1........and so on, until seven digits had been given.
Wow! How exciting!
Forget voting for "She Loves You", this had never happened before!
The volume of calls to WIFE had simply overwhelmed the phone company's ability to handle them.

Between the Beeps of the busy signal, I gathered four or five phone numbers of female voices and called them, just to find out who they were and where they lived.

And nothing ever came of it.

I have no idea why I remember this incident, except it was exciting and fun at the time.
But I do remember that "She Loves You" won in the voting, even without my vote!

Florida Fishing Trip w/FlyGirl

I met FlyGirl early one recent morning at the Drop Anchor Inn in Islamorada, Florida. The Drop Anchor Inn is a quaint little resort in the Florida Keys. Obviously used by the fishing crowd because the Atlantic Ocean is at its back door. You can tie up at the docks and without having to go in or out of an inlet; you can be fishing in the Atlantic within minutes. On the east coast of Florida, you have to travel up or down the Intercoastal to an inlet and then on out into the Atlantic from there. The inlets are few and far between. Depending on where you start from, this takes time away from fishing. The beauty of the Keys is that the Atlantic is right ‘there’.

It was good to see FG again. She introduced me to her Hoosier Boy. HB is a great guy who seems to be a good fit for FG, if I may say so. Their fishing boat is a Mako w/ twin outboards. Great fishing machine! We started trolling for Dolphin after running out about 8/10 miles. After some instructions as far as compass headings and GPS readings, HB handed the controls over to FG at that time and HB and TwoDogs concentrated on catching fish. FG did an outstanding job of staying the course, all the while watching for the birds. Birds are an indication of bait fish. Bait fish attracts the bigger fish. We eventually ended up about 20 miles out and got lucky in the fact that we spotted some kind of floating structure. FG guided the boat to it and it looked like it was a large wooden gate or possibly part of a good sized crate. The good thing about this – it attracted the fish as well as us. At once, we begin to see activity all around the boat. One time, we had 3 fish ‘on’. Several times, we had 2 ‘on’ at the same time. We lost a few and had to put back a couple because of their size. We ended up with 8/10 - 10/12 ???(honestly, I lost count...) nice size dolphin in the fish box. Also brought in a small Black Fin Tuna. Not sure how we ended up with him, but, we did. We arrived back at the docks at 1600hrs. and FG and TD started cleaning the boat and rinsing off the salt from everything. HB started cleaning the fish. FG had made an 8:00 reservation at Happy Days. This is a ‘Hook and Cook’ restaurant not far from the Drop Anchor Inn. The same fish that we were at the docks with at 4:00 – we were having for dinner at 8:00. Cinders and I were staying at the Sheraton on Key Largo and I had run back to pick her up. She wouldn’t let me wear my fishing clothes to dinner so I had to shower and change into something a little more presentable. She assured me that everyone would be very appreciative of that. I think they were….

And what a dinner it was. As soon as we were seated, the Chef/Owner sent over shrimp cocktail – enough for everyone. Some of the biggest shrimp that I had ever seen. Very good, too. For dinner, we had the option to have the fish prepared several different ways. We chose Blackened, Coconut encrusted, lightly fried, and the Happy Days special - all very good. Pete and Judy, friends of FG and HB, joined us for dinner. Pete is a Charter Boat owner and Captain. He and HB have known each other a long time and thru the years, both have earned their fishing ‘wings’. Tales of men (HB) overboard and almost drowning, fishing for sails off of Palm Beach to running aground in the Marco Island area (as the tide was about to go out) to coming back in Sebastian Inlet during a raging storm as the tide was going out. Each of us had some tales to tell. Some funny and some not so funny. Respect of the ocean and the recent storms seemed to be a theme. When you are surrounded by water as you are in the Keys, you certainly better respect both the ocean and the storms.

As our long day drew to a close, it seemed a good time was had by all.

But, has it really been 40 years, FG??

One Fine Day. Wasn’t there a song by that name back in our day? 40 years ago…..

Vandy Called !!

Getting a phone call from Mr. V. really took me off my pegs! Here I am getting supper ready and out of the blue, Vandy is on the phone!

He sounded so good and chatted for a quite a while. He wanted to tell us how much he appreciated all that we did for him at the reunion and let us know one more time how much he enjoyed our class.

Flygirl, he really liked the Vandy Candy. "I put it out for the old people around here and it goes fast,” he said. He likes the blankets too but I don't think he naps much; I think he uses them as chair covers which is a fine idea.

He said he should have known they would ask him to speak at the Alumni Banquet when they gave him a free ticket! He really gets a kick out of seeing people he knew as kids. "I really enjoyed my job there. It was a good place. Good parents. Good kids,” he said.

I told him we want to gently roast OJ in October and he was happy to volunteer some OJ stories -- one story about OJ losing a golf ball and them spending a very long time trying to find it. Another story about OJ going ballistic and throwing a club into a tree. He had them looking for that club for a long time before he realized them were looking in the wrong tree. I’m sure he can add more stories by Fall!

Be on the look out for a golf ball that chirps (I know they make them some place). That would make a great gift. I have a small kid’s golf club that I can paint glow-in-the-dark orange -- the better to see in trees. All other roast ideas are still in play so keep thinking about it

I think Vandy really enjoys hearing from kids from CG so sending him a note, giving him a call or even stopping in to see him means a great deal to him. He has many friends and interests where he lives. He stays active and has fun every chance he gets. Still, a note or call from a student would probably make his day.

He sure made mine!

CGHS Alumni Banquet 2006

Ferdy and I got all cleaned up and went to the Alumni Banquet last night. First time for both of us and we did have a good time. We sat with Hawkeye and Hotlips, Mr. and Mrs. Shifty and djinindy. Bob White and Mrs. White were at the table next to us and Bobby Hudson was there. He has moved back to Indiana from living in Florida for 22 years. Ruel West brought Mr. V and he gave a little "people" speech that was touching. What a man! He said it was the first banquet that he had attended since Mrs. V passed away and it felt good to get out and see everyone. Bless his heart, you can't help loving that man.

A viewing of the new DVD about the history of the school in White River Township ran before we had our meal. It is really interesting to see the first school located in the "grove of maple trees", the old school buses and then the old high school and gym that burned before we started first grade.

The class of 1956 had a bunch there to celebrate their 50th and it looked like they were all having a great time. There were several from the class of 1946 also. The most "senior" alum was a gentleman that graduated in 1934. I didn't get to talk with him but wish I could have. I think he would have had some interesting things to tell us.

Before the meal we sang the Star Spangled Banner then had a blessing praying for our men and women fighting for our country. We feasted on a buffet of fried chicken, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, fried biscuits and cake. YUM...it was gooood!

GOLDEN HORSE! Ferdy and I could NOT see any silver sparkly balls anywhere; you must come back and whip things into shape for future alumni. Ferdy and I were so disappointed that they have discontinued your silver sparkly balls; the cafeteria lights just didn't have quite the same ambiance!

At any rate, the class of "65 had fun talking and laughing with each other about old times, weddings coming up this summer for Ferdy's and Hawkeye & Hotlips' kiddos, plans for future "minis" and visiting with other old friends. WE MISSED YOU ALL THAT COULDN'T BE WITH US LAST NIGHT, but "a good time was had by all" who did go.

Would you change anything?

Thinking about the last 40 years, it's easy for the "if-I-had-known-then-what-I-know-now" thoughts to set in.

What would you do differently, if anything? College, marriage, kids, hair color?

"She's Real Fine....."

(Simultaneously Posted at "Pitchpull".)

I'll bet many of you reading my title finished that sentence, didn't you?

I bet also that you finished it by singing it to yourself!

"4-0-9".....
Not
one of my favorite Beach Boys tunes.
It was catchy and fun.
You still hear it now and then,
not because it was a great song, but because it was done by a great group.

"The Beach Boys" were, and are, one of my favorite groups.
I think they're underrated by many.........
Not the Beatles, who were motivated to produce "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" after hearing "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys.
During turbulent times growing up, the Beach Boys took what was in my head and put it on the radio.

Brian Wilson, Beach Boy #1, was a genius.
The harmonies he molded, using his brothers, a cousin, and a friend, were fabulous. Combined with a simple but well written verse, you've got music that will stand up for years.

Go back now and listen to "In My Room".
What a great song:

"In this world I lock out all my worries and my fears,
In my room."

Did your room ever feel like sanctuary when you were growing up?
Mine sure did. And the harmonies on the song are breathtaking. Brian put my thoughts to simple, wonderful, words and music.

A couple posts ago, (at "Pitchpull"), I wrote about the "Oldies" DJ I used to listen to on Monday nights. One of the love songs I used to request and dedicate to Sara Jean was "God Only Knows":

"If you should ever leave me,
My life would still go on, believe me.
The world could show nothing to me,
So what good would living do me?
God only knows what I'd be without you!"

Wow.
All my adult life I've envied Brian Wilson's ability to not only write those words, but put them to music that brings tears to my eyes.

On a more upbeat note, musically, there's
"Wouldn't it be nice?"
I think these words illustrate the huge change that has taken place in our attitude towards sex, marriage, and relationships:

"Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through?"

A catchy, upbeat tune........ but as a young man with hormones beginning to rage, I could easily identify with the accompanying words!
Part of my attraction to the song is the fact that it sprang in what seemed to be a simpler, more structured time, when there were unwritten rules about what was, (AND WAS NOT) supposed to happen when "Boy meets Girl."

Music from the mid-60's through the mid-70's tells much of the story and mood of our time. I think some of it is truly classic, and will still be getting airtime when many of us are motivating from point A to point B on our "hover-rounds".

Late 60's Beach Boys stuff, when Brian began to experiment with drugs, confuses me. No longer simple, the music is strange....more complex, and doesn't stay in my head. But the early stuff, when he was still thinking like a teenager and writing for them/us, is unforgettable!

How to Post on "Vandy's Kids"

This was originally posted on 19 January. An email came today asking about it. I'm tickled that there is more and more interest......... this is such fun!
Here's the deal, my friends....... ya just gotta experiment; take a chance on making a fool of yourself. Those that have learned how to post here have done it by making mistakes and learning from them. We won't think less of you while we watch you make the same mistakes we made!

Sharing a Alumni Story and a Red Face.

Not too many years after we were out of high school, I got elected to the Alumni Committee. Back then, there was always a huge turn out and the old timers would show up like crazy and fun was had by all. It was the early 70's and I was secretary and the dance part of the banquet was big stuff.
We had had one of our many committee meetings to make the banquet a success and we each were given our lists of errands to do. Mine was to make several calls and one of them was to locate the music and a huge silver, rotating ball to hang from the ceiling.
One day as I am flying through my list of to dos I make my call to the party company and as soon as the kind gentleman on the other end of the phone line answered, I blurted out, "Do you have Sparkley Balls"....Silence.... Dead Silence on the other end of the line. I had no idea what was going on. Then a little chuckle, then it turned into a huge laugh and he is sharing this with the other employees, I still did not have a clue as to what was going on. He said, "Thanks for asking...but I don't think so." By then I had realized what I had asked and was so embarrassed, I had a really hard time finishing the call.
Well, needless to say, we got our ball and the dance was a success. The night of the banquet, as all the officers stood up and gave their reports, our lustrous President, Bob Kelso, told my story to the whole room. It pretty much brought down the house and I could barely read my minutes when I stood up next. I did get a big round of applause though.
It wasn't too many years later, I left the state.

Vandy's Kids

Vandy's Kids

WRT and CGS greetings, wet and cool, great day to share memories with friends.

150 attending alumni banquet with more hopefully to attend. tickets still available or at door 6/10 6 pm HS cafeteria. committee is working hard to make this evening memorable. Tours of HS available if any interest.

DVD is completed of CGS and WRT , 30 minutes of professionally narrated music and voice telling a little about our school and communitiy. 100 photos used along with copies of advertisements shown, lots of memories. cost is being determined by alumni committee but should be around $15.

thanks for allowing me to share. my mother, first CGS likes to hear about students to used to care for when they were ill or just wanted out of class for a few minutes. JT working hard on his farm, excellent neighbor hatchet

AMAZING INVENTIONS OF OUR TIME

Over the months we have talked about so many things that were so important to our growing up. Before computers, microwaves, Ipods, gas alternative vehicles, CD's, tapes, even tape players and on and on, there was one thing that stood out over and among the rest for me.
THE FIRST COLOR TV.
WOW, I remember when dad brought the first one home, a big (well it was back then) 21" RCA combination TV, Radio and Record player. It was in a beautiful walnut cabinet, and I was in total awe of it. It had those beautiful reds, blues and yellows, all perfectly running together like a new madras shirt, sans the white levis and loafers.
He had sneaked out of the house one weekend day without a word and came back several hours later with this huge box in the back of his pick up truck. Just as proud as a peacock.
I know he had to have paid on it forever, since back then they weren't cheap, but nothing was too good for my dad to watch his beloved Bonanza. It was his pride and joy.
On Bonanza night, me and all the little neighbor kids would stand at our picture window with our little snotty noses and dirty hands leaning in as close as we could to watch that amazing appliance.
That was one of the most ornery things I had ever seen, if you bumped it, or looked at it wrong or God forbid move the living room furniture around, you had to call in the TV repairman to bring out his metal ring to do a voodoo dance around the room.
I suspect it had something to do with demagnetizing, but back then, who knows what it was called. But anyways it worked....sorta of.
Over the years, I suspect, I wore that great machine out more than once at parties. We burned records on it until the wee hours. We had the TV repairman on speed dial back then...okay it really wasn't speed dial, but we did know his number by heart.
In spite of all of it's problems, it was a special treat for our family and will be treasured always.
Do you remember your first color TV?

The Alumni Banquet

Updated, and moved to the top:

A little coordinating here.......

to reiterate, the Alumni Banquet will be held 10 June.

I've been to several, and they are fun.
The food is better than I expected.
There is a great chance you'll see friends you haven't seen in years.

Today I got a note from BMG that she and Ferdy will attend together.
I know several others have to be planning to attend.
It would be great if the class of '65 had a good contingent to represent us there!

If you plan on attending, how about leaving a comment on this post, so that others can be looking out for you......to save seating and make sure the class of '65 can get together as a group?

Hawkeye, you're attending this year, correct?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Updated, 30 May:
This came today from Bob White, addressed to most of us:
A quick note, date 6/10/06. Time 6:00 PM place CGHS, call me for tickets, $14.00 each, $16.00 at the door. I need to know [via e-mail] by thur 6/1/06
So, you have very little time. Email, or grab the phone.....make the call!
Mr. Legan
BoMarGirl sent me Mr. Legan's email address, and I contacted him.
I got a wonderful reply, then sent Mr. Legan my phone number.
This weekend he called, and we spent almost an hour on the phone, sharing memories and catching up on almost 50 years of life.
I don't remember how many individual classes the class of '65 was broken into for Sixth Grade....was it four?
Did all of us occupy the old "Spitting radiators, Middle Building" that year?
Whatever......
a chunk of us were Mr. Legan's first Co-Ed class at CG.
There's an explanation for that:
The year before us, the only space available for Mr. Legan's class was in the old tunnel near the Boys Locker Room, in the new Gymnasium area.
The powers that be were worried about the proximity to that Locker Room, and decided an all male class would avoid a bunch of complications.
Here's a thumbnail of his history:
He taught at CG for 7 years, then went to Franklin, where he taught Algebra and Math for 16 years, until 1980.
From 1980 until 1995 he taught various levels of Math and Social Studies at a school in West Virgina, where he had inherited a farm. During this time, he also raised cattle on a small scale!
He met his first sweetheart while attending Franklin College, and later married her. They were married 43 years. Her death left him wondering whether life was worth living for quite a period of time.
He finally met and fell in love with another Hoosier Girl, (0ddly, both his wives were from New Albany). They were married in 2006.
She is a Nurse. She plans on retiring at the end of the year, then together they plan on doin' a bunch of travelling.
Mr. Legan has 3 sons and a daughter, ranging in age from 38 to 46.
His daughter, (a teacher!), lives less than an hour from me, and I've challenged him to call me when he comes to visit so Sara Jean and I can drive there and take him to dinner.
When I reflect on my favorite teachers, Mr. Legan stands out.
He was fair. He had a positive attitude. He actually taught!
Our phone conversation was a delight........he related how many other professions get a chance to see their finished product: the worker on an assembly line gets to see the car he helped build being driven by it's purchaser on the street. In talking with BMG and myself, Mr. Legan has gotten a glimpse at his "finished product".
Obviously, I hope he is pleased.
O.J. TALES
O.J. TALES
Following are some O.J. "Tales" that I think y'all should know.
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING WITH O.J., ET AL
Each year at Christmas time, O.J., Mr. V. and John Clements would go downtown Indianapolis to shop for their wives' gifts. Tradition had it that before the shopping began they would have a "few" drinks. Well, each year the gifts were very interesting and the wives never knew what to expect for Christmas. Some the of gifts were VERY nice and some were VERY dumb.
O.J. AND THE BROWN COUNTY OPEN
The Brown County Open was held at Brown County Country Club and O.J. and "the guys" participated every year. One year, the Brown County Country Club decided to make some improvements and they put in a new swimming pool and fixed things up very nice. They planned a Grand Opening with festivities on Saturday before the Brown County Open that year. O.J. and "the guys" decided it would be a good idea to go down to the Club the night before, climbed the fence, went swimming in the new pool and just generally made a mess of things. O.J. and "the guys" were never invited back to the Brown County Open again. He was "persona non grade" at the Club from then on.
BUT that didn't stop O.J. He and "the guys" continued their own yearly golf tournament each year, still calling it "The Brown County Open" no matter the location of the golf course.
O.J. AND THE CHICKENS
O.J. has a terrible fear of chickens and birds. One year around graduation time, a student brought in 2 chickens to school in a gym bag. Just as the student was about to open the gym bag and release the chickens in the hall (Dr. George Frampton, Assistant Principal at the time) came around the corner and saw what was about to happen. So, the chickens were placed in the gym bag in George Frampton's office. Jerry Dunn (Principal at the time) knew very well that O.J. was scared to death of the things and opened the gym bag, let the chickens out, left them in George's office and shut the door. The chickens caused quite a racket and flopped and flew around. Whenever they would settle down, Jerry would go by the door and beat on it and liven things up a bit. O.J. was VERY uncomfortable and upset with the whole thing. Seems no one knew (or would) get the chickens out of the Main Office or what to do with them other than torture O.J.
Mr. Sloop
Thinking of the planned get-together in October, what are your thoughts on gently roasting O.J.? A few silly gifts, a few more silly stories etc?
I don't know ANY funny O.J. stories. My only contact with him in HS was in Algebra class and to this day seeing him makes my stomach churn, I break out in a sweat and begin to look for a way out of the room! I was not good at algebra and would rather have a root canal rather than remember the time I spent in that class. It wasn't his fault; I just hated algebra.
However, I'm sure others have fond memories of him and silly things that happened while he was coaching or teaching. I'm sure my uncles have a few stories, hopefully GP rated. They all played basketball together at Union so surely there are a few stories we can use to roast him.
What are your thoughts?
Did You Belong?
I moved this back to the top because I had a question or two to add -- PT
Let's talk about cliques.
There are cliques in every gathering of people.
CGHS certainly had 'em.
I always thought they were destructive, and tried to avoid being part of one.
Jocks....
Eggheads......
Hoods........
and then......"Other".
Gals, please comment on the clique subdivisions you experienced.....I know there were groupings for the gals too, but I wouldn't assume to identify them!
When did you begin to feel the pressure to be part of a clique?
For me, it was late in Grade School, and I didn't like the pressure.
I had friends from classes above and below us that fell into all the above groups. I didn't want my friends to be all from one of the above categories.
I think I was successful. By rubbing elbows with all the sub-groups, I was able to better keep my finger on the pulse of what was going on in school, and I could fall back on friends from the individual groups to "watch my six"........ help keep me out of trouble.
For all of us, peer pressure was huge. For some it was worse than others. I'm sure there are a thousand stories to be told......the big question is, CAN they, WILL they be told?
Do you have a story you can relate without hurting feelings?
I've previously admitted to being ashamed for treating a classmate poorly.......
one of the wonderful things about our mini-re's is that I was able to personally apologize for being an *##@+$%........!
I look forward to your views and comments.
Brisket
Did I tell ya how much I enjoyed seeing everyone? What a Blast! I don't think I had that much fun at our Prom or was as tired after !!!
Brisket : This may be more information than anyone wants, but this is how I make brisket. I'm so glad y'all liked it.There are as many recipes for brisket as there are people. The one we like best is taken from the Cheyenne Frontier Days “Daddy of ‘Em All” Cookbook.
http://bbq.about.com/cs/brisket/a/aa122599.htm
This article clarifies a few things to know about brisket. The Indy butchers thought I wanted corned beef brisket. Nope. Get fresh brisket.
In Indy, I could only find the fancy-cut, trimmed, flat-part of the brisket.
In Texas, we aren’t that fancy; I get the biggest one that will fit in my oven (they shrink btw), trim most of the fat but leave about ½ inch on top. When it’s done and cooled, I just scrape off the fat. Some people leave it on, they say they like the taste. I think they are nuts
• Preheat oven to 450 F
• Place brisket on three layers of heavy-duty foil, fat side up.
• Rub both sides generously with Bronco Buster Rub (recipe below)
(**This part is my idea
• Splash about ½ to 1 C of Claude’s Brisket Marinade Sauce
• Add about that much water
• Sprinkle a good amount of Worchester Powder on top
• Add some Emeril's Southwestern seasoning if you have it **)
• Seal each layer of foil tightly and separately (very important)
• Place in a 9x13 (or larger) pan and place in the oven on a cookie sheet ,, makes it easier to lift out later
• Reduce oven temp to 275 F and let it bake for 8-12 hours. I usually put it in the oven after supper so it is ready by breakfast or a little after -- running an oven in the daytime is not a good thing in Texas. Plus it makes it the house smell so good by morning.
• Let it rest for 30 min or so, then cut against the grain for ¼ inch slices (I have NEVER been able to do this part. It just falls apart and looks like a mess but it doesn't seem to matter)
• Make a criss-cross pattern of the BBQ sauce of your choice (we like Masters Original) as much or as little as you like.
• I usually pour some of the baking juices over the sliced meat too. The rest of the juice can be tossed or saved to season soup.
• Wrap it back up and keep it in a warm oven or refrigerate until needed.Lift it to the serving dish with a large spatula
• Brisket freezes well and leftovers are great in vegetable soup
Now for the rub. I make up 3-4 recipes of this and keep it on hand--ya just never know when ya need to cook up a brisket! This stuff can also fix freezer burned meat,,, just treat the meat like it's brisket and it put it in a pita pocket. WA LA
Broncho Buster Rub
1 clove of garlic (optional & I omit it)
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon dried sage
½ teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon ground oregano
¼ teaspoon red pepper
¼ teaspoon pepper
Closing out the Mini-re.....
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Purple Tabby has left the building.
PT stopped by Casa Greybeard on her way to the Lone Star State.
She arrived yesterday afternoon.
After catching her breath from her drive, we took a chance on our newly opened attraction, "The China Buffet".......
I can report, it was more than satisfactory.
After a tour of "Smallville", we came home as dusk was falling.
Were your ears burning?
If you were at the Mini-re, your name came up and we said wonderful things about you!
At Midnight, it was obvious to Sara Jean and I that PT had had a long day.
We pointed her in the direction of her den.
She overslept her appointed wake-up time, and I was glad.
A bright-eyed PT emerged from her lair and jumped in the shower.
Coffee and more talk followed, including discussion of dropping by the "National Quilting Museum".....a PT passion.
But PT is homesick........she misses her CinC house, and her own bed.
We reviewed the road atlas and discussed a more direct route home.
So for the Greybeard household, the Mini-re is finally over.
Wonderful memories abound from such a short period!
Hawkeye is making plans for the Alumni Banquet......
Indy Echo and her better half are making initial plans for the October Mini-re.
You missed more than you can know if you weren't with us in Nashville.....
Get your calendar out now and make a note for October.......
I can promise, you'll be glad you did.
I'm sure Indy Echo will be posting prospective dates here soon!
Do you remember the Gypsies??
As we have all been going back in time and visiting old friends and renewing old aquaintances, remembering old things of our childhood.
I remember something from the "Valley" that I thought of off and on over the years.
Do you remember the gypsies on Smith Valley road every summer. On the right hand side on the way to Highway 37 by the little creek, just over the bridge?
I always liked playing in that particular creek, as it had a deep hole, (probably all of two or three feet) to catch the bigger ones. Again, probably all of about 6 or 8 inches. But back then, they were whales.
We were still very young and one Spring day you would be driving by and poof, there they were by the creek. The had their wonderful brightly painted horse drawn wagon and about a zillion little dark haired kiddies running around.
We never heard from them and they seemed to mind their own business and after a few weeks, poof, they were gone again. Then one Spring, they never came back. We never saw them come or go. They just appeared.
I used to ride my bike by to try and catch a glimpse of them, they had bright colored clothes and lots more hanging from a line. They had a fire and their horse nearby, and a dog or two.
Don't know if they were true gypsies from Romania, but they gave that appearance to me. Or maybe they were Basque on their way to the mtns. to raise sheep. But then again, I had quite an imagination.
I always thought that this was one of the most wonderful and mysterious things of my childhood.
Many years later, while visiting and later living in the mtns. of Colorado, while four wheeling, we would come across a group of Basque sheep herders and stop and talked with them on more than one occasion. They always remembered us. They would stay in Colorado until the end of summer, then move their sheep on into Utah for the winter. They had this tiny little camper pulled by horses and dogs to chase the sheep, everything done on horseback. One year they had 4,000 sheep and the following year, they had 8,000, what a sight to see, 8000 sheep crossing the mountains. Then one year, there they were again, this time with a new pickup truck. I guess sheep herding really does pay. The waved us down to share with us. I still have their pictures somewhere.
I often wonder to this day, whatever happened to those mysterious people by our little creek.
Why didn't we take pictures back then?
Vandy's Kids
After a Great weekend, Party,Party..... It was great time but a lot of it would not been
possible with out the big heart of someone's Mom.
We need to give a Big thank you to Kathy's Mom.
Let's flood her mail box with thank you cards.
It would made her feel good and she deserves them. She opened her home to us
for 2 days and missed her Pacer game. Load up that mail box with cards and letters
of love and thanks. You guys are the best.
The Mini
Anyone missing yesterday, missed a precious memory, good food and a great time. I know as I age, these get togethers mean more, treasured more and will never come again. Sure, there will be more re-unions, but will someone be missing? Some class mate, teacher or Mr. Vandy himself, that we wished we had just been able to say one last word to or see just one more time.
Special thanks go to Kathy, Patsy and everyone who spent hours putting this together. And Kathy's mother - what a gal. The time and skill that went into making the blanket for Vandy, He won't forget this class of 1965.
The coasters for each of us and the fans, what a treat!
Friday night also finds PT, Ferdy, FlyGirl, and maybe a certain long-haired Redhead starting their own "Micro-Mini" while putting the polishing touches on preparations.......(Wouldn't you love to be a fly on that wall?)
If you're not already leaning toward Nashville, you're gonna miss a GREAT one!
C'mon folks.......We'd love to see ya!
I'm a Vandy's kid now!
Well, always was, but have accepted the invitation from the big bro to join the blog group.
Very different memories as I was 5 to 6 years behind most of you, but being a VK also presents many familiar memories as well. Petting the ponies over the fence during recess, the odor that let you know that, yes, you are now in the middle school building!! Waiting for the auditorium to be built so that assemblies could be held somewhere besides the gym. The haunted house that scared the poop out of me set up in the locker room tunnel. Going across the street to buy the biggest apples I have ever seen in my life. Watching my bro pretend to be a tree so the "woodman" could TRY to cut him down during homecoming bonfire festivities.
I don't know that I will have much to comtribute, but I will continue to read, and hope that our generations of VK's will grow.
"Last Chance" at the "Last Chance"!
Wow.
This bloggin' is really magic!
I published two "Last Chance" posts by mistake, trying to edit one of 'em.
I couldn't delete either....I couldn't modify 'em.
Rod Serling was in control!
Then I threw up this post, and suddenly the others disappeared.
So.....
here's your last chance to comment on an open forum before Nashville!
Let 'er rip!
Follow That Dream!
Coming South, spending mornings on the balcony is a sweet pain.
I didn't see them, but my earlier-rising Bro.-in-law saw 13 dolphins in groups of 3 and 4 swim West to East this morn.
The Flyer in me loves to watch the Pelicans making their way to their next meal....also in groups of 3 or 4.....amazingly gliding through the air with almost no wing flapping.....using the air currents provided by God.
The water against the shore is Turquoise. A football field from shore, it's Aquamarine. Halfway to the horizon it turns to Emerald. Where the water touches the sky, the color is blue-slate. Now and then, a swarming school of fish moves through our view, again changing the color of the water to Green/Black. It's a wonderful place to watch the day unfold.
I hope soon to spend more than a few weeks here every few months. We hope to retire here soon. But every time I turn around, I find myself committing to something that keeps me on the treadmill at home.
My son graduates college in December. That is the last true impediment to our coming South, at least on a part-time basis.
Making the change.......moving South, at least during the Winter months, will mean a huge adjustment on our part.....and that big adjustment scares me.
Don't we all suffer anxiety....sometimes even stress.....even when the adjustment results in something you know you'll love?
Tools and I have talked about his decision to move to Galveston and his reasoning behind the move. He has not regretted his decision for one moment.
I need to plan. I need to start the ball rolling.
I need to "pull the trigger".
Southbound and Down....
Posting this is taking time I should be packin' the car....
Chaos!
It always is when we are headed somewhere for more than an overnight.
We're taking the first step toward seein' y'all next weekend...
Headed South to our little piece of paradise for the week.
11 hours from now we'll be sittin' on our balcony,
lookin' at the surf lap at the shore, feeling the warm onshore breeze......smellin' salt air.
I'm taking the laptop.
If any of you should feel the undeniable urge to throw up a post or comment here about me/us, or email me, I'll still get it.
I'm excited about our vacation.....
I'm also excited about next weekend....
seeing SO many people for the first time in almost a lifetime!
Wish us safe travels.
I'll post when we get there,
AND RUB IT IN!
UPDATE:
We're here safe.
Drove through VERY heavy rain much of the trip down, then suffered with Tornado warnings just North of us last night.
Today dawned clear blue and 22.....(old aviator term).
Board meeting behind me, the rest of the week is mostly pleasure.
Life is good.....wish you were here.
Class Segregation......Again
I'd like to explain part of the reason why it was such a surprise to me to find out our classes were segregated in Grade School.....
Fifth Grade.
I was in Mr. Dietzer's class. (All the girls swooned over Mr. D.).
Eggheads like Vicky and Allen S. were in this class.
If that was the extent of it, maybe I would have noticed the fly in the ointment.
But it wasn't.
I sat next to a guy that shall remain nameless for reasons almost immediately obvious. His first initial was S.
I don't know how old S. was.......
two years older than the rest of the class?
Three?
(Maybe Four?)
Shy......Tough........ Nice guy.......
Stank!
Body odor was bad.....breath was worse.
Time for the History lesson, and S. has no textbook.
I'm reasonably sure his family had no money for textbooks......
he wore the same clothes to school every day.
Mr. Dietzer would say, "S., pair up with someone so you can read along."
S. would look around, a little embarrassed.
My classmates, swell folks that they were, looked the other way and whistled a little tune to themselves.
(At least they didn't put fingers in ears and hum "Lalalala"!)
I always felt sorry for S., and scooted over so he could invade my airspace.
And always.....ALWAYS, I was immediately sorry that I had done it.
He had pathology goin' on in that mouth.....
Breath so bad it brought tears to my eyes.
Breath so bad it may have taken a couple years off my life.
I joke now......
it wasn't a joking matter then, and it isn't now for kids that poor.....
those that obviously don't have parents involved in the tiny details of their lives.
S. couldn't read.
Mr. D. would call on him to read, and I prompted him through the reading to get it done before the hour was over.
I can't guess at what his I.Q. was.......it's incidental......
it wasn't stratospheric.
So, in that class we had the eventual class of '65
Co-Valedictorian,
(was the other Co-V. also in that class? I can't remember),
and some poor guy with B.O.,
the worst Halitosis I've ever experienced,
who was functionally illiterate.
How was I to know I was in a Segregated classroom?
It sure didn't seem like one.
My Tail's on Fire!
And I’m running as fast as I can with one foot nailed to the floor!
Playing catch-up today. Getting ready to leave for Indy at O-dark-thirty tomorrow morning. Can’t wait! There is so much going on and so much to do, this note will be a jumble of thoughts – try to keep up ;))
First I want to send a belated welcome to Hawkeye, Flygirl, Tools, and BoMarGirl. Welcome to Bloggersville! Isn’t this just the greatest thing? Blogward Trojans!
GB & TD: You are right. Fishing and quilting are much the same; we just don’t do slimy stuff & prefer white zin to beer.
GB: not all women are smarter than men but the Ladies of VK will give most a run for their money. ;)) We’ve grew up with some very smart guys, ya know, so we have been competing with the best since the bell rang in 1952.
In other news: CINC House and I have been remodeling the bathrooms & the kitchen plus painting the living room, family room & dining room (Oh Carol, where the heck have you been these last 2 months! I really needed your expertise! Love your web site)
Furniture is still piled in other rooms, waiting for something or another to get finished. Curtains are still waiting to be hemmed etc.
The good news is that 25% of the house is cleaned out, streamlined and spotless. The bad news is that the rest of the house looks like a set from Sanford and Sons. Jimmy Hoffa could be in the garage for all I know.
For weeks, it’s been a steady parade of plumbers, carpenters, counter-top guys, tile guys, glass guys, and electricians. I’ve seen more butt cracks in my own house than I ever did working in hospitals. Plus each fix-it man has to tell me what a lousy job the last guy did. Why do they do that?
Time to focus on the trip home: put hold mail, take cats to the Cat House, clean out fridge, clean out car, pack 4 quilts to finish, pack sewing machine etc, pack Easter eggs for Abby Rose and Drew (both of whom are perfect in every way or did I already tell ya that? ) go to beauty shop, pack clothes, lose 20 pounds, & uh wait. I think it may be too late for that last one.
However, I want to make a complaint to the Gods of Body Shapes. I don’t think it is fair that I have been exercising vigorously and watching what I eat (read: did everything but put duct tape on my mouth) since February & have lost so little poundage.
My body seems to attract & hold fat the way the back on the refrigerator attracts & holds dust bunnies. If my goal in life was to look like one of those ancient fertility goddess statues, I can almost say Mission Accomplished!
Unless I meet a plastic surgeon this afternoon, who has a lipo machine the size of a commercial Shop Vac, I will have to show up at the reunion looking like the mom in Hairspray.
Plan: put a camouflage tent on and pretend everything is normal. Maybe no one will notice. Maybe everyone else has gained weight, too?. Nah,,, Jeanie? Nah,,,, Janet? Nah,,, Ferdy?,,,pahleese!,,, Flygirl? No way! Surely SOMEone else will be a little, shall we say, Rubenesque?
I would really like to be smaller but I am not. I exercise and eat right so I feel good. The truth is that vanity isn’t a strong motivator for me these days; I don’t really care that much.
I care about other things like seeing old friends, getting caught up on the news, sharing memories and laughter. I want to hear what's happened in their lives, look at photo albums of their families, see their grandbabies.
But dang! A 40th reunion! I hate to be big at a reunion!! If I get small in the next 6 mo. & later kick the bucket for some other reason, my classmates will say. “It doesn’t look at all like her. She must have been very sick before the end.” Arrrrrgghhh
OH! Next Monday I will be calling y’all to confirm the folks on the Reunion list. Gnaw Bone Food & Fuel (don't ya just love that name?) needs a final head count by Tuesday when I need to place our order.
Flygirl, I’m already counting you as “there”. You need a break and we all need to see you. (Just bring the masks with you. If you like ‘em, I love ‘em) Gain some weight one the way, too ;)) That goes for everyone!
Sorry for bloggzilla of an entry but my butt’s on fire, ya see, and ,,,,,,
TROJAN CHALLENGE
Ok get your year books out, shake the rust out of your heads and sharpen your pencils.
Todays challenge: how many of our 140 students of the 1965 graduating class, spent all their
years at Center Grove Elementary and Center Grove High School.
I have spent some time looking through
the year books and think my number should be close. The number might surprise you. GIVE IT A SHOT. I was puzzled
that one name in particular wasn't on the list. Maybe I missed something....
As I was working on this project, I came across some names that sounded familiar from our first grade class, Dickie Farrington,
Fred Heger, Sandy Burns, Eddie Claus, Ronnie Mason, Alfred Green, and Sirona Morton.
About half way, in the seventh grade, Ronnie & Donnie Cummings, Judy England, Mike Jones, Mary Kottkamp, Gregg McClain,
Sharon Napier, Sandy Ruoff, Donna Cunningham and Judy Willoughby. Even though these classmates were not in our '65 graduating class,
they will always be in our memories.
You too will have some classmates of your own that will jump out of the year book.
I've been rattling on......Don't forget the challenge!
The Hits Just Keep On A'Comin'!
Add another to the Blogroll:
Check out BoMarGirl !
Who will argue?....the more the merrier!
A Micro-Mini Reunion!
Ferdy called last night.......she is safely in Orlando.
She and FlyGirl are making arrangements to meet somewhere there in paradise. Sounds like all is well with them.
If we're lucky, maybe someone will take the time to put fingers to keyboard, (Roxie would be SO proud!), and let us know what trouble they're gettin' into!?
The Open Door Policy
I'm just checkin'......
I'm not sure my experience here is the norm.......
I lived in that little house on Morgantown Road,
5 houses from Smith Valley Road, for over 18 years.
I cannot remember locking the doors to that house.......EVER!
I'm not sure my folks even had keys to lock the doors,
had they wanted to.
In the summer, the front door was always open so whatever breeze there was could blow through the screen door, unlocked of course........even at night.
Sara Jean and I chose to live where we live now, partly because the atmosphere here is similar to what I grew up with......we seldom lock our doors, knowing that suspicious folks lurking around will be noticed by neighbors and reported to authorities.
I know, however, that if I lived in a less rural setting I'd certainly be locking my doors, even if I just stepped out to get a loaf of bread.
Do you lock your doors every time you leave home?
What was your experience when you were growing up?
Blogs, Big and Small
Have ya begun to read other blogs?
For those of you that are new to all this, there is a huge diversity of "stuff" out there for you to enjoy, or be irritated by.
Many blogs, like "Vandy's Kids" and "Pitchpull",
will have a "Blogroll" somewhere on a sidebar, with a list of blogs the author likes and suggests you review.
Or, you can find those blogs that deal with subjects you have an interest in by going to Google Blog search.
Purple Tabby loves quilting, so she could go to Google Blog Search
then enter "quilting" in the search box.
I just did it, and 105,525 items related to quilting turned up.
If you're really new to all this, let me turn you on to the "Monster" blog: Instapundit.
Glenn Reynolds is the owner/author, and his site is really an aggregation of blogs and news items he wants you to have a look at. He's a law Professor in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I honestly don't know how he teaches law and keeps up with his blog. Go have a look, and you too will be amazed:
Instapundit
Other blogs that entertain me:
Vodkapundit
and
Varifrank
.......and a site that compiles news items and sometimes borders on
"yellow journalism", but is nevertheless entertaining and informative:
Drudgereport
If this blog biz is really new to you, those are enough to get ya started.
When you've had a look at those, go exploring, and if you find something that makes you laugh, cry, or think in a different way......come share it with us!
More Smith Valley
What about Doty's grocery store at the corner of Morgantown Road and Old Smith Valley Road. Fred and Beattie. He is the one who build the Beehive.
Effie's variety store and Don's grocery in the old valley. At Don's would get a soft drink called Ski. I fell through the ice at the creek and had to run to Steve W.'s house before I froze. Bill Doty's old gas station. Gas twenty- twenty five cents a gallon. The money I was making back then... It is cheaper today. I would stop at the Texaco station after it closed and drain the gas out of the hoses at the pumps for my scooter. Bill Doty had a nickle coke machine but he charged six cents. He had a can screwed to the front of the machine to put your penny in. Sometimes we would put a nickle in the machine and Rattle the can.
( Remember G. B. )
Ferdyflyer.... I was at my Dad's house today and someone has started fixing your house up . It had been empty for a long time.
Tony Lee Shirrell, Jr.
This is my youngest brother's son, TJ Shirrell. He is Iraq now on his second tour there. Lets keep him and all our troops in our prayers. One of my sons just returned from Iraq in December.
I'm Baaaack
My trip to Pearlington, Mississippi with 13 of the men from my church began at 5:00 AM, Sunday, March 19th. After an uneventful trip down, our truck, with three men switching the driving, and perfect weather, arrived at 6:00 PM Indy time. Our goal was to build wooden 12 x 16 buildings for hurricane Katrina victims.
We slept within sight of the Pearl River and the Gulf of Mexico in some kind of fold out plastic huts. It looked like corrugated cardboard, but it was made of plastic. There were two guys to a hut. The temperatures ran from 75 degrees during the day to mid 40's during the night. We had portable outdoor showers.
The first two or three days some of us worked near the huts in a yard where we had jigs and patterns to build "kits" of four walls and rafters. As we finished the kits, others of our group took them to the prearranged sights to be assembled. The buildings had elevated floors, two windows, one door, a tin roof, and were wired for electricity.
We had wonderful lunches each day in a building nearby that was next to a hurricane damaged Baptist Church. We were fed meals that were true home cooked southern delights such as fried chicken, fish, vegetables and even pie. Most of the people that were fed there were volunteers, but anyone who needed a meal was welcome. One day they fed over 260 people. A lot of college and high school kids were there on their spring break volunteering. There are still a lot of good kids out there, but a few dumb a---- make them look bad at times.
Reverend Willie Rawlings, the pastor of the church that fed us the lunches, invited us to a Wednesday night revival at a nearby church. We all were happy to go. This was a southern black Baptist Church. Not being familiar with the area we got lost. We called Reverend Willie and he sent someone to get us. We got there a little late. We all had on matching bright blue shirts, and our light complexions made us stand out like a sore thumb. That church was really rocking. After the service several of the members talked to us about how much they appreciated us being there. We all so enjoyed this different wonderful evening.
I talked to a man who was 78 years old and had been a preacher from 1951 until 1997. He told me his experience during hurricane Katrina. He said the water came very fast. He, his nephew and his dog got next to a large tree and hung on to it as the water rose. He said snakes were moving over his arms as he hung on. He didn't think the snakes would bite him because they were trying to survive and reach high ground as he was. The water got deep enough that he could stand in a fork of the tree. He said a prayer that the Lord could take any of His trees, but to please let him have this one. The three of them stayed in the tree from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM before they were able to get out. He still has nightmares about his time in the tree. He talked about being crazy before this, but now.......... What a great guy.
I saw a lot of boats and barges on land. I took a picture of a good sized boat, The Captain Chip, sitting on top of a car. People have asked me why this boat hasn't been removed after seven months. I tell them it is not a priority at this time. Houses are completely destroyed with only the front steps remaining and others with trees still on them. What you see on television cannot show what has happened. I can only compare it to when you see pictures of the Grand Canyon and then you see it in person and there is no comparison to the size.
We had our work pretty much done by early afternoon on Firday, March 24th and our lumber was running out, so we decided to leave a day early. We left at 1: 30 PM Indy time and got to Greenwood at 1:00 AM, 795 miles - don't do the math....
We built seven wooden buildings while we were there. I wish I could tell you that all of the buildings went to people that needed them, but I can't. We had a list of people who were to get the buildings, and this is what we did. I am sending an E-mail to the Building Goodness organization with my concerns and I hope to hear from them. I don't think I will work with this group again, but I will go back. My other trips south to work were not with the Building Goodness people. One was a minister in the area contacting someone he knew at our church and the other was connected to Billy Grahams Samaritans Purse.
Walking The Run Way
My youngest grandson, Jack, walked the run way today modeling for Dillard's at the Pardise Valley Mall in Az. He is 16 months old today.
Are You Foolish?
Got anything to say for yourself on this 1st day of April?
Well then...........go right ahead!
